VENUS HAD A STRICT RULE when it came to dating or even allowing new people into her life. She didn't. One way or another they would always leave. Whether it was from something uncontrollable like death, or something she tried to hide like finding out about her past lives. Everyone always left. That was the constant in Venus' life.
But Steven Grant had somehow weaselled his way into her life for the better part of a year and half. He had let her knock down a very tiny part of the wall she build around herself since being freed. And she still wasn't sure how to feel about it.
She smoothed out her skirt as she walked out of her bedroom. She had never been on a date before. Never having the time for it. She wondered what things could have been like if life had been different. If she had a mother or some girlfriends like in the movies. Helping her find the perfect outfit. Do her hair. Her mother over-protectively telling her to be careful, but most importantly to enjoy her time.
She looked up when she heard a quiet meow. Smiling at Pumpkin who was splaying out on the couch. Venus furrowed her brows as she looked around the room, realising that something was missing.
"Pumpkin! Spit it out!"
The kitten tilted its head. Her big green eyes watching Venus as she walked closer to the couch. Her heeled ankle boots clacking on the wooden floorboards.
"Pumpkin!"
The kitten looked as if she had rolled her eyes before standing up. She opened her mouth. Revealing a bunch of tentacles before she spat out a lamp and a small cushion.
"Good kitty," Venus patted Pumpkin's little head. She had received Pumpkin from Nick Fury before he left the earth again. Although the creature looked like a normal cat, it was a Flerken. An alien species with pocket dimensions inside its little body. Ones that were so big they were able to swallow a hundred people each even as kittens.
She met Fury not long after she had been freed from the clutches of the Red Room. There had been Widows that managed to get away, stealing the antidote for the mind-control that was placed upon them to make sure they would never run away. To make sure they didn't get caught, they would pass the baton as one would say. A widow that freed another would pass her a load of antidotes, allowing for them to always slip under the radar.
Sophora was the one who saved Venus. She gave her the last batch of antidotes that she had on her. Allowing Venus to save ten other Widows. Katarzyna Bakowska, Ania Kowalska, Alina Volkova, Daryna Babich, Ariel Hazan, Elizabeth Williams, Maya Gonzalez, Bianca Rossi, Sophia Marino, Lena Lewandowska. They were names she knew she would never forget. Ten names that showed her that although she had done bad things in the world, she had also done some good.
When Fury finally found her. He hired her to help her find someone and in return he helped her find her true identity. She was no longer a Black Widow, The Spanish Widow or Number Three Thousand-seven hundred- ninety eight. She was Venus Isabella Maria De Luna. She finally had a portion of her old life back. But she would never get back the years they stole from her. She would never get another chance to be in her mum's arms. Gloria De Luna was murdered shortly after they took her only child from her. Prying the four year old girl from her mother's arms in the dead of the night. Venus didn't even know where her mother was buried.
She let out a shaky sigh. Trying to compose herself as she looked in the mirror that was hanging in her living room. Her eyelashes were done in a 60s way, with thick layer of mascara on both top and bottom lashes. She had some smudged eyeliner and a matte finish lipstick covering her lips. She grabbed her bag and left the flat.
Steven and Venus agreed to meet at the pizza place. He had plans to stop off at a shop before he saw her to get her some flowers and chocolates, wanting to surprise her with it.
She arrived just in time and was shown to their table. Steven not having arrived yet. Venus felt a bit awkward as she sat there alone, sipping the water a waitress brought out to her and her dark brown eyes scanning the menu. She looked down at her phone at the time, noticing that he was almost fifteen minutes late she decided to ring him. When he didn't pick up she sent him a quick message, worrying that something had happened. But even after waiting a few minutes she received no response.
Venus could feel herself becoming agitated. Especially when people around her would glance her way, their eyes full of sympathy as she sat there alone for the past twenty minutes. She could feel her heart breaking as she realised why she had put up her walls in the first place. People left. They weren't meant to be trusted. She was made to be alone.
After receiving no replies from Steven and her calls continuously going to voicemail. Venus finally decided to leave the pizza place. Keeping her head up when people watched her leave, muttering under their breaths to themselves. On her way back to her flat, Venus stopped off at a corner shop, buying herself a bottle of wine and a couple of tubs of Ben & Jerry.
When she reached her floor, stepping out of the elevator. Her eyes drifting to look at the door that belonged to Steven's flat. She sighed as she walked past, she couldn't believe how wrong she had been about Steven Grant. Assuming he was genuinely interested and wanted to see her that evening, even if not romantically she had hoped they would be good friends. Finally Venus looked away from his door, walking towards her own place.
