Love is a specific type of pain
An interesting type of healing
There's no going back to when everything was familiar once you've loved someone
They take over your thoughts
Carve their own special place in your heart and claim it's out of altruism
And yet still not notice the crimson drops of blood their spilling with each benevolent cut
People will do anything for love
Kill each other softly
Break each other gently
Confess their undying affection and take it away in the name of loving you so deeply they have to let you go
At some point you have to wonder
Is love worth it if it ends in loss
You reconsidered your every promise
Your every sweet nothing
I overanalysed your every thought, word, feeling
Until you didn't have any
You were screaming and I didn't hear you
I could walk through a room on fire and you wouldn't notice
But we never left
We were scared to be alone
Our fatal flaw
If I thought of all the ways we hurt each other I think I'd break
Be utterly destroyed
Burned from the inside out
A pain that started as a dull ache from my guilt
Which gradually progressed to a searing burning that I have come to know all too well
So in my head
It doesn't hurt that bad
I set aside my own agony to notice yours
We used to be so happy
So full of life and love
Love too sweet it became sickly
Love so boundless we assumed it would last
We thought it was love
Hopelessly convinced ourselves
We lived in the same house in different galaxies
Two worlds apart
Yet close enough that I still see the ghost you have become haunting my home
My sanctuary
We were the perfect love story the author forgot about and never finished
The audience to our tragedy frozen in time still waiting for the ending
Holding their breath in suspense
As we choke on the gall of our poisoned love
Fuelled by an ignorant sense of loyalty
The naive choice of two kids desperate for someone to hold
Yet as I look into your eyes
Passed the sadness at their surface
Deeper than anyone else has bothered to explore
I realise I did love you
Even if I was blinded by my own selfish longing for care
I cherished you on a level of devotion I don't think I will ever feel again
You are the love of my life
The beat of my heart
In this universe
You were my youniverse
