About an hour later, the doorbell rang, and Doris shuffled over to answer it. Detective Carol Watson was standing on the other side. "You phoned?"
"Yes," Doris retorted angrily, "About an hour ago! He probably has rigor mortis!"
Carol looked Dan over with a practiced eye. Luckily for Carol, Dan had not gone into rigor mortis. When she looked at the crime scene, she could not see the murder weapon. However, now she was closer, she could see the knife poking out of Dan's back. "Where were you when this happened Mrs. Scarlet?"
"Asleep. Then I heard some noise, so I came out and saw someone jump out of the window!"
"Can you describe them, Doris?" Carol asked, hoping to get some more details. Carol was curious as this case was like the girl in the woods. To Doris, this looked like a messy room with blood but to Carol, it looked like a room full of clues. Clues to how to solve this murder and arrest this sick and cut-throat criminal for the last time.
"Well, let us see. He was tall and had a strong Italian aftershave. He wore a black tuxedo like he had just come from a dinner party and his shoes squeaked when he walked, like Marco Perella deck shoes. You know, the stupid ones? Anyway, yes, he also had messy black hair as if he had not brushed it. To be honest, he looked like ... he looked like my son, Teddy. But that is impossible. Teddy's dead!" Doris said, her voice trembling with the trauma she had just seen in front of her.
"Thanks for this Doris. You will be under witness protection. Just a precaution," Carol demanded as Doris started to protest. "Also, you will need to come with us. This is now a murder scene. You will have to stay with a friend for a few weeks. Go and pack your suitcase. I will drop you off."
Doris shuffled off, gripping her walking stick until her knuckles turned white and muttering curses at Carol as she walked. As Doris packed, Carol phoned Meredith. "We got another one. We need you to name him to see how he died. Plus, can you find out which men in the city are tall, wear Italian aftershave, wear tuxedos all the time, Marco Perella deck shoes... Yes, Marco Perella... The squeaky, stupid ones? ... Oh, so you do know them. Anyway, oh, and who has black hair? Yes, yes, ok. See you in 5 mins."
At that moment, Doris walked back into the room carrying a suitcase. They hopped into Carol's Camaro and drove to Doris' friend's house, found near the coast. Carol drove back to the crime scene in silence. When she arrived, Meredith greeted Carol. "So, what's up?"
