FOUR YEARS AGO

EMMELINE MADISON CARROW

The war had broken out in the middle of the night, catching almost all of us unprepared.

No one expected an attack from Voldemort today, but he was just outside, beyond the barrier we had erected.

Voldemort was in the front row, followed by thousands of Death Eaters and dark creatures.

The Dementors tried to penetrate the barrier on the other with poor results.

We were all outside with our wands pointed up as we recited the spell.

The barrier was not very strong but it would last for a few more minutes, just long enough to think about what to do once Voldemort and his followers crossed the barrier.

I looked up and pointed it at Mattheo, who was already looking at me.

The others were busy keeping the barrier.

Instead, he approached me. My heart started beating fast and I swallowed.

We never told anyone we were dating, we kept it a secret all year.

Not because I didn't want to, but simply for a safety factor, I didn't want to get Mattheo in trouble if his father found something.

In public, we were acting like friends, but when we could make time for each other, I fell in love with him more and more.

We never told each other explicitly, but we both knew how we felt about each other.

We also know that we have no future together.

This was the part I was trying to think less about, but deep down it was the truth. For this reason, every minute I spent with Mattheo I tried to enjoy it to the full, without thinking about what would happen next.

«Emmy» Mattheo whispered. I looked up and saw him a few inches from my face.

«Everything will be fine» he said and I just nodded.

«But what if something happens?» I asked with trembling voice.

«It will mean that we will leave and we will make a life elsewhere. You and I alone» he said.

That doesn't sound bad.

«Promise not to hurt yourself» I said.

«I promise you Em» he told me before leaving a quick kiss on my forehead.

The teacher called us all back, so I started walking in her direction.

«Em» he called me back and I turned to him.

«Tell me» I told him.

«I—» he began to say.

«I know, me too» I said to him and went back to him and took his hand.

«Now let's go, we have a war to win» I told him.

He nodded and we approached McGonagall.
