y/n linked arms with his partner lan wangji, the two of them strolling through a busy market near their shared home in some nameless mountain. the streets were lined up with merchants hawking at people to purchase from them, calling them by using pretty words.
y/n and wangji had been courting each other for quite some time now. they'd met when y/n was still a nameless cultivator from a nameless sect, going from one location to another to hunt for demons and ghosts or any of the supernatural. he'd met wangji on one such night hunt, the two of them working almost perfectly together in sync.
wangji invited him to another night hunt after that, then another, then another, until one day, he invited him out to dinner, and the rest was history.
y/n knew what he wanted to buy, wangji did too, but they wanted to take their time, a rare thing in new couples. they liked to bask in each other's presence, even a casual stroll down the market is enough for them. their arms linked, they weaved through people coming in and out of the market.
"should we get apples?" wangji asked, pausing in front of an apple stall. "aiyah, sir, buy fresh apples, three apples for one coin. it's a good deal, right?" the merchant tells him.
"sure, let's get them." y/n smiles at the merchant. "but I want to choose my apples."
the merchant smiles warmly and tells y/n to go ahead. his hand hovers a few apples, picking one, two, then three. the merchant happily accepts wangji's gold coin as y/n places the apples on the basket. "now for our lunch." he smiles up at wangji.
the two of them walked near an area at the market where people were selling meats and vegetables. the streets were packed, barely enough for one person to squeeze through, let alone two. y/n sighed, letting go of wangji"s arm. "let's meet up at the bridge in about... an hour, okay?" y/n smiles up at his partner. "we both have things to buy."
wangji silently nods his head in agreement. "be back soon." he tells y/n. his partner grins, "you know it."
the two of them parted ways, knowing where exactly to go to buy the things they needed. wangji headed over to spices, and y/n headed over to the meat stands. he knew what delicious meal he was gonna cook tonight, but sadly, meat was not on the menu. he stared longingly at the piece of meat on the stand. becoming partners with a member of the gusu lan clan meant sacrifice.
which means, that y/n, as lan wangji's partner for life, had to adopt lan wangji's customs and traditions. one of which, was being a vegetarian.
just as he was about to pass the stands to head on over to the vegetables, he heard a voice call out to him. "hey you! pretty guy in the white!" another thing y/n adopted from wangji, was that he had to wear custom-made white robes of the gusu lan clan to match the purity and sanctity of his partner. as a result, he stood out from most people.
he turned his head, facing the young man who called out to him. y/n pointed to himself in question. "yes, you!" the young man laughs. "saw you lookin' at this fresh piece of meat here, why don't you buy this one right here? if you buy it now, i might throw in an extra slab of meat, just for you, pretty thing." he winks, and y/n hums, thinking about it.
he paid no mind to the young man's feeble attempts at courting him. his heart already belonged to someone else. but he was thinking about his offer. "two slabs of meat for 2 gold pieces?" y/n clarified. "yup. I'll let you take one more if you buy one." the young man laughs.
y/n leans down on the displayed meat, thinking long and hard. he would never feed wangji meat, but all he could think about now was how much he missed the savory taste of it.
"c'mon," the man in front urges. "you know you want it." he sang, a teasing tone in his encouraging words.
"i..." y/n muttered. "i... won't take it!" y/n decides. he sighed. "why not?" the man asks him. "young man, the offer is attractive, but i've already committed myself to someone. what they can't eat, i won't eat, where they go, i go." y/n answers simply. "apologies, but i must be going." y/n bows his head before hastily leaving the stall.
"hold on!" the young vendor leaves his position in front of his stall and chases after y/n, who refuses to stop walking. finally, the young man catches him, grabs him by the wrist and forcefully stopping him from moving. "please let me go." y/n sternly tells the vendor. "ah, but if i can't get your gold coins, can't i at least get your pretty name, pretty please?"
y/n's brows furrowed in annoyance. "no." he tugged on his arm, trying to pull away, but the vendor's hold was tight. "c'mon..." the man whined pleadingly, tugging on y/n's arm a little too tightly. "i said no." y/n tries again to pull away, his free hand now resting on the handle of his sword on instinct.
"but-" the man couldn't even finish his sentence. all of a sudden, he was thrown at least a couple of feet up into the air before he lands on the ground. "who the hell?!" the vendor growled, getting up. "I'm surprised you survived that." y/n breathed a sigh of relief when he saw the familiar, sturdy back of lan wangji.
his partner extends an arm in front of him, trying to shield him from the vendor's eyes. "stop. you are being disrespectful." wangji says. "huh?! and who do you think you are?" the vendor growled, marching up to lan wangji. he grabs the cultivator by his pristine robes, crumbling the white cloth in his fist.
wangji's brow twitched in annoyance. he opened his palm, preparing to strike the man away, but y/n quickly grabs his fist. he laughed, "wangi, that's enough." he says to his husband, smile on his lips. "we should really get going." he pulled wangji away from the vendor, gently pushing the young man away while he kept one hand on wangji's fist. the spiritual energy he'd collected on his palm seemingly disappeared.
"c'mon.." he whispers to wangji, dragging him away from the crowd that they hadn't realized formed. he hastily walks, one step over another until they were far from the crowd. y/n sighed in relief. "by the ancients, that scared me." he muttered to himself as he slows to a stop, breathing a sigh of relief. "are you alright, y/n?" wangji asks. "huh? yes, i'm alright. i should be asking you that question, y'know." y/n releases wangji's hand, placing both of his hands on his hips. "if i hadn't stepped in, you would've seriously injured that man."
wangji knitted his brows. "i... i'm sorry." wangji apologizes softly, hanging his head low. y/n was quiet for a moment as he stared at lan wangji. then, he smiles. "oh, you." he laughs, lifting his arms. he wraps them loosely around wangji's neck, bringing him in close. "that man was touching you." wangji muttered, leaning in close to the crook of y/n's neck.
"it's fine. i wasn't injured or anything." y/n chuckled, placing a kiss on wangji's temple. "have you finished shopping?" y/n asked, gently rubbing circles on wangji's back. "no." wangji answers and y/n laughed, pulling away from wangji, much to his dismay. "then let's finish up, shall we?" y/n laced his fingers with wangji's, tugging him back to the market.
together, the two walked back into the bustling market, hand-in-hand.
