1.1 What to Expect
In a world characterized by digital connectivity and constant accessibility, social media plays a central role. We are often warned about the potential dangers and negative impacts of social media. But what if we could flip this discourse? What if we didn't just see social media as a distraction or a waste of time, but as a tool for self-reflection and personal development? Many of us spend hours on social media platforms. And what do these platforms do? They get to know us. They understand what we like, share, view... And this can be a real eye-opener for us.
This approach forms the core of our project. Instead of viewing social media as passive consumption, we want to explore how we can actively use these platforms for ourselves. Behind the seemingly endless streams of posts, videos, and likes lies a valuable source of self-awareness and introspection. Platforms like TikTok or Instagram are designed to keep us on their pages for as long as possible by presenting content that matches our preferences. These algorithms can help us learn more about ourselves by analyzing our behavior on these platforms.
By consciously paying attention to what is suggested to us and how we behave in social media—how we react or present ourselves—we can learn a lot about ourselves. It's amazing how much we can learn about our fears, worries, and desires when we look closely. Social media often knows more about us than we do ourselves.
In this "guide," we will examine how social media reflects our desires, fears, and dreams, and how we can use these insights to live more consciously and achieve our goals. We will uncover how our interactions on social networks reveal not only something about the world around us but also about ourselves.
Chapter 2, especially 2.1, is particularly important and can be revisited and worked on frequently. Read all chapters and sub-chapters, even if you don't use dating apps, as you may still be able to apply the questions posed in other ways.
Join us on a journey of self-discovery through the world of social media. Discover how you can use reflections in digital currents to gain clarity about your own values, dreams, and motivations.
1.2. Goal and Approach
The goal of this book is to bring about a paradigm shift in how we view social media. Instead of being mere passive consumers, we want to encourage you to use social media as a tool for self-reflection and personal development.
The approach is based on the idea that interacting with social media platforms can offer us profound insights into our own inner selves, rather than being just a superficial distraction.
The aim is to equip you with tools to actively shape and utilize your social media experience, at least from time to time, to lead a fulfilling and self-determined life. We believe that social media can be not only a source of entertainment but also of self-awareness.
We're not here to explain the world or tell you what you must do. We are all too different to prescribe a formula for everyone. Instead, the focus is on becoming aware of your own personality, values, interests, goals, desires, as well as problems and uncertainties. Only when we are consciously aware of ourselves can we work on and develop ourselves. Therefore, it's important to spend at least a small portion of our time focusing on ourselves. We owe that to ourselves. Our hope is that, by the end, everyone will have gained greater clarity about themselves—about their goals, strengths, weaknesses, and issues—and perhaps have an idea of how to address them or describe their problems in order to seek help.
In striving for brevity, we aim to keep this book concise so that everyone, even those who are not fond of reading, can use this brief guide as a prompt for thought and quickly work through it.
1.3 Social Media Algorithms
The algorithms that govern content on social media platforms are highly sophisticated, relying on complex calculations and patterns. I'm not an expert in this field, so I won't delve too deeply into it, as I lack the technical expertise. However, the exact workings are not crucial for our purposes; what matters is understanding what we are dealing with, or rather, how platforms operate with us.
Platforms analyze not only our direct interactions like likes, comments, shares, and who we follow, but also our indirect behaviors such as time spent on specific content or how we scroll through our feeds. This helps them understand what matters to us and which content resonates with us. They aim to identify patterns and trends in our behavior and can suggest content that similar users find appealing.
A key goal of these algorithms is to keep us on the platform as long as possible by presenting content that maintains our attention. This is exactly what we aim to work with and leverage to our advantage. Platforms generate personalized recommendations and content designed to meet our individual needs and desires.
Algorithms continually learn from our interactions—what we like, share, or watch for longer periods. We can use this knowledge to reflect on our own behavior. For example, what content is being suggested to us and why? What does this say about our current desires, fears, or needs?
