Part 1: At Home

Pragyan was lost in thought, staring blankly at the books and notes scattered across his study table. The room was dimly lit, a single lamp casting a warm glow over his cluttered workspace. The recent battles and the burden of his responsibilities as a Veilguardian weighed heavily on him. He tried to focus on his studies for the JEE, but the memories of the Soul Reaver's defeat and the immense energy of the Heart of Light spell kept intruding.

"Sona, come to dinner," his mother called from the kitchen. Her voice was a comforting anchor, pulling him out of his reverie. He closed his books with a sigh and made his way to the dining room.

The dining room was cozy and inviting, the aroma of freshly cooked food filling the air. His mother, a petite woman with kind eyes and a warm smile, was setting the table. Pragyan couldn't help but feel a pang of guilt. She had always been his rock, supporting him through every challenge, yet he hadn't told her everything about his life as a Veilguardian.

"Sit down, Sona," she said, using the affectionate nickname she had given him as a child. "I've made your favorite tonight."

Pragyan smiled and took his seat. "Thanks, Mamma. It smells amazing."

As they began to eat, his mother looked at him with concern. "How are your studies going, Sona? Are you managing okay with all the pressure?"

Pragyan nodded, trying to keep his tone light. "It's a lot, but I'm managing. Just trying to keep up with everything."

She reached across the table and squeezed his hand. "You know, Sona, you don't have to do everything alone. You can always talk to me. I worry about you. You're so precious to me, and I can't bear the thought of losing you."

Pragyan felt a lump form in his throat. "I know, Mamma. I promise, once all this is over, I'll focus only on my studies. I'll leave the Veilguardians. It's just... right now, I can't walk away. There's too much at stake."

His mother's eyes glistened with unshed tears. "I just want you to be safe. I can't live without you, Sona, you know that. Please, take care of yourself."

"I will, Mamma," he assured her, his voice soft. "I promise I'll be careful. And once this is over, I'll come back to you, whole and safe."

They continued their meal in a comfortable silence, the bond between them providing a momentary refuge from the chaos outside. Pragyan cherished these moments, knowing they were fleeting but precious. The world outside was filled with darkness and danger, but here, at this dining table, he found a small pocket of peace.

As they finished dinner, his mother began clearing the table. "You should get some rest, Sona. You look exhausted."

"I will, Mamma. Just need to finish a few things first," Pragyan replied, standing up to help her with the dishes.

"No, no," she said, shooing him away gently. "I've got this. You go and rest."

Pragyan smiled and hugged her. "Good night, Mamma. Thank you for everything."

"Good night, Sona. Sleep well."

Pragyan returned to his room, feeling a renewed sense of determination. His mother's words had given him strength. He knew he had to stay strong, not just for the Veilguardians, but for her. The thought of her kept him grounded, reminding him of what he was fighting for.

The moon cast a silver glow over the quiet neighborhood, the only sounds those of crickets and the distant hum of traffic. As he lay in bed, Pragyan's thoughts drifted back to the battles and the challenges ahead. But instead of feeling overwhelmed, he felt a sense of clarity. He had a promise to keep, both to his mother and to himself. He would see this through, and when it was all over, he would return to her, safe and sound.
