1) Jagannatha, literally Jagat Nath or the ruler of the universe. He is considered to be the avatar of Shree Vishnu, whose origins lie in Odisha. In culture and symbolism, he is similar to Shree Krishna, hence he is also considered the eighth avatar of Shree Vishnu.
2) Just as Shree Krishna is to Shree Jagannath, Shreeman Balram is to Shreeman Balbhadra, so he is the brother of Shree Krishna.
3) Devi Subhadra is Shree Jagannath's sister. She is worshipped with her brothers in the Jagannath temple at Puri. Her statue is made with big, rounded eyes, a yellow hue and adorned with red.
4) Rath Yatra is the worship of the trinity, Shree Jagannatha, Shreeman Balbhadra and Devi Subhadra, along with The Sudarshan Chakra, on the rath Or chariot. This year, it was held on seventh of July. It is celebrates in Vaishnavism over all parts of India. While in Shaivism, it is celebrated in Nepal as Shree Jagannath is considered a form of the Bhairava form of Shiv in that region.
5) The rath yatra is a memorable event, which celebrates the return of Shree Jagannath, Devi Subhadra and Shreeman Balbuadra, from their home in the Jagannath temple, to the Gudicha temple. It's also seen as a way to cleanse the mind.
6) Three deities, Shree Jagannath, Shreeman Balbhadra and Devi Subhadra, along with Jai Sudarshan are taken out of the temple.
7) The chariots used in the rath yatra procession are called Nadighosh ( Shree Jagannath's chariot) , Taldhwaj ( Shreeman Balbhadra's chariot) and Devirath Or Darpadalana ( Devi Subhadra's chariot)
8) The festival is to commemorate the historical event of the three deities leaving their home in Jagannath to their aunt's home, which is in Gudicha Or at the Gundicha temple. This is for Devi Durga or Ma Gundicha.
9) On the second day of the yatra, rituals like Alati (arti) Abkash ( avkash Or holiday), Ballabh and Khechdi bhog are performed, following which, the Mangalparan ritual is carried out, where in the deities board their chariots. After their boarding, the deities are adorned with malachula and Becha. Following this, the chehra pamphara ritual is carried out.( cleaning of the chariots with a golden broom... Very posh.) The chariots are then pulled over a distance of three kilometers to the Gundicha temple, by four horses on each chariot. Hera panchami and Sandhya Darshan. Bahuda yatra celebrates the meeting and marriage of Shree Lakshmi and Shree Jagannath, at the Mausimaa temple. Suna besha Or adorning with gold. The deities are adorned with gold on the shukl ekadashi. Adhar panNiladri Bije - the deities sit on their bejeweled platoforms, concluding the rath yatra at the Gundicha temple.
10) This is because, it traces life's events and the beauties of life, from childbirth, youth, adulthood, where Shree Jagannath married Devi Lakshmi and their ultimate crowning in the Gundicha temple. It offers the peace and purity of life to everyone. Offering salvation to all.
