This was a nightmare. Well, he could be happy if it was, but he simply couldn't call it that, because he was wide awake! Again.
Being slightly uncomfortable because they slept outside might be part of an adventure. It even reminded him that few rare times when his parents made a tent in their garden and all three of them slept there for the night. His mother called it their small garden adventures and his father grumbled all the time. How Bilbo understood him now.
Although he would be still able to manage, have it not been for sleeping habits of his companions. Namely the biggest dwarf of the company, who not only kept periodicaly waking him up by unusually loud snores but also grossed him out. It seemed like there was always a couple of moths that found themselves being inhaled and exhaled over and over again by him.
Not that he had something other against the dwarf. Bombur was quite nice fellow and a skilled cook too. Gods know that Bilbo himself wouldn't be able to prepare such tasty meals without properly equipped kitchen and with only limited supply of spice.
Bilbo wanted to go on an adventure. Yes. He even signed the contract, yet he started questioning his decision from the very first night. He was getting used to traveling, but he still missed his comfortable smial greately.
Another loud snore echoed through the camp and he snapped. He gave up. There will be no sleep for him. Again. He sat up rashly and twitched his nose. He might as well take a walk around the camp and have a smoke. Maybe some good Old Toby will calm his poor nerves. He doubted that more exercise would be apreciated by his sore muscles though.
He let his eyes run over the campside. Dwalin was on the night watch and Gandalf smoke his pipe. He might as well join him. The wizard would be much better company than the tattoed warrior.
He was just getting up from his bedroll when he caught a movement from the corner of his eye. He followed it and instantly froze.
He was perplexed by the sight. Maybe... maybe he was still asleep after all. He blinked a few times but nothing changed. There was a stranger in their camp and noone did anything about it!
The creature was croutching right next to young Ori and slowly flipped through pages of his journal. All the sounds they made drowned by Bombur's snoring.
They appeared to be quite small with thin arms and long fingers. The upper body covered with curly hair. There wasn't much he could really see because of the dark.
It was weird that noone noticed it. Nor made an alarm... Or did they? Maybe it was here for the last minutes or hours and they knew of it. Maybe Gandalf knew the creature, hence no alarm. It didnt seem dangerous too him, although he didn't really see much.
He just took a breath to ask but before he turned his head, the creature lifted its gaze. They made an eye contact. Its pupils colored light blue by the reflection of the fire. It was of simmilar manner as when cats eyes shone in the dark. His heart calmed a bit. The feeling he got was like the one he gets while stargazing.
It seemed like they both stopped and stared at each other. He twitched his nose again and turned his head to ask the wizard of the creature. He still should make sure they knew about it. "Gandalf?"
The wizard lifted his eyebrows at him and Bilbo just gestured to the visitor. "Mind to introduce me to your friend here?"
Bilbo knew something was wrong when Gandalf's expression darkened. He darted his eyes back to the now slowly backing creature and back to the wizard.
"Pfff. Afraid of the dark now mister Baggins? Its just the play of the shadows." Dwalin smirked while his eyes kept scanning the darkness that surrounded them. As if he saw nothing. But it was still there.
Bilbo knew something must be wrong as he felt the wizard's presence grew.
When Gandalf suddenly jumped up from his seat, Bilbo got strateled by the swiftness of the movement but didnt have time to properly process it as the shout and bright white light filled their camp.
He could hear dwarves waking and swearing but he saw nothing. His eyes stinging and wattering by the sudden abuse.
He could hear wizard's voice booming again "Come forth foul creature! No more hiding in the shadows!" as he was finaly able to open his eyes.
The place where he saw the creature was empty now.
