Chapter Four
Big Wedding Blues
"So...Heart? That's different."
Heart kept a small and friendly smile on her face, not the least bit surprised he mentioned it.
Heart was well aware of the fact that she had a unique name. She was born with it and grew up with it. Whenever she introduced herself all she ever received were surprised reactions and interested minds wondering how she earned the name in the first place. Unfortunately for Heart, it was a story she stopped wanting to tell at a certain point, for many reasons.
So here she was, waiting for those familiar words to come out of Dave Harren's mouth. Almost everyone she met asked why her parents named her after a vital organ but she always hoped they wouldn't. The only person who hadn't was Violet.
"There must be a pretty great story behind that, right?" He finally asked, letting out a slight chuckle.
"I was thinking the same thing!" Sara chimed in.
Heart's actual heart kind of sunk a little—it was the same kind of sinking you get when you have to do something you don't want to do or say something you don't want to say. Pure panic. The only thing she could think to do was lie. The same lie she told for years.
"Actu--" Just as she was about to answer his question, a phone started to ring.
Dave immediately stuck his hand in his front jeans pocket and checked to see who was contacting him. Heart couldn't help but notice a slight change in his facial expression once he read who it was. He suddenly glanced up at Heart and then quickly averted his eyes to his fiancé at his side.
"I'm sorry, I've got to take this," and he immediately picked up the phone, putting it up to his ear, quickly placing a peck on Sara's cheek, and turning around to take the call outside in their large back patio.
Sara just watched him carefully outside for a second and then looked back at me. "So sorry, this happens a lot because they're always needing him at random times, even when he's not scheduled."
Heart slightly shrugged. "Oh, no, it's okay. He's busy, I get it," she said, assuring Sara with a smile.
"Let me bring over those snacks, he'll probably be a while," Sara said, turning around to head back over to the kitchen.
Heart just nodded and glanced outside to sneak a look at Dave Harren. He was standing there, staring deeply at the ground. One hand held up the phone while the other one quickly came up to the back of his neck, rubbing it deeply. He took a deep breath and slightly shook his head. He closed his eyes for a moment and then opened them, saying something inaudible to Heart's ears.
Heart was beginning to feel like a creep as she observed him. The last thing she wanted was Sara or Dave to think was that she was a closeted fangirl so she looked away.
Heart was more curious than anything. She hadn't done her proper research on Dave Harren's life and she honestly didn't care to. The less she knew the better but Heart was trying to find something different about him and she just couldn't see the difference between them. Yes, he was ridiculously rich and everyone knew his name but he was human, just another stranger in the world.
Finally, just as Heart was sitting back down she heard the back patio door open and Dave Harren came back in and looked around. Heart assumed he was looking for Sara.
"She's in the kitchen," Heart said aloud.
"Thanks," he replied and made his way to the kitchen.
Finally, Heart was all alone with Sara's pile of stuff. She could finally breathe. This was going to be an adventure but all she needed to do was breathe and she could do anything she put her mind to.
