It was a rainy evening, well not quite evening it was actually 4:32 AM. "I swear in the name of Medusa, why did I choose to become a doctor?" Charlie grumbled as she ran from the parking deck to her apartment building. She had just gotten through another extensive shift in the ER dealing with broken bones, heart attacks, and an angry mother demanding that they look at her son's runny nose immediately.
The young woman used to work strictly as an orthopedic surgeon, specializing in the spine. Although she still performs surgeries when requested, Charlie decided to work full-time in the ER. She grew frustrated only working as a spinal surgeon considering almost nobody took her seriously due to her young age and being a woman. At the ER nobody complained about having a young, female, doctor. They were usually either unconscious, screaming in agony, or unintelligible.
Charlie had absolutely no problem with puss, blood, or mucus. Direct human interaction on the other hand, no thank you. Which is the main reason Charlie thought she was going to break when a middle-aged woman demanded that she examine her son's runny nose. The woman proclaimed the snot was "the wrong color" and wouldnt let Charlie get back to her job. Praise the gods Tallulah, Charlie's work wife and best friend, saw the random mother screaming and immediately intervened before Charlie lost her hard-earned job.
Charlie laughed at the memory and fished her keys out of her backpack, fully ready to change from her spare scrubs and curl up in bed. Why was she wearing her spare scrubs rather than her usual? Well while working, her scrubs had gotten soaked in blood. Unfortunately, the reason for that isn't as dramatic as a patient bleeding out and almost dying, which she would have preferred in all honesty. No, she was stuck calming a young girl who had fractured the Radius bone in her wrist.
The upset girl decided to hug Charlie and shove her tear-stained face into the woman's stomach before she had the chance to retreat. Being the Scorpio that she is and not loving physical contact from strangers, Charlie started patting the child's head while whispering soft words to detach the small human from her hip. Obviously not having any success with that, she was about to ask the parents for help when she felt something warm and wet on her stomach. She immediately grabbed the child by its shoulders so she could look at her face, hoping, praying that what she thought happened didn't. 'Dammit, a nosebleed, seriously?' she thought, suppressing the urge to sigh.
The child had put a large amount of strain on her nasal passages from crying and screaming, resulting in a nosebleed. Taking a deep breath to keep a calm smile on her face, she called to a resident to clean the child's bloody nose and immediately got out of that situation. Once Charlie left the room, someone yelling alerted her to a code blue a few rooms down. 'I guess changing will have to wait. I just love my job.' Charlie huffed and rushed to the patient currently in cardiac arrest.
Charlie was absentmindedly doing the same nightly routine as always, lock the door, hang up her bag, change out of her scrubs, and brush her teeth. Her main scrubs were in her bag, so she took them out and placed them in a dresser drawer for her next shift. While at the hospital and making her rounds, she had asked a nurse to wash them before Charlie left for the night.
Suddenly she felt a pain worse than that of all nine hells shoot up her foot from her toe. "FUCKING HOLY MOTHER OF SNAKES I SWEAR TO FU-" Charlie quickly exclaimed however she was cut off as she tripped over air and landed harshly her ass. "Why meeee" she groaned in agony and cradled her throbbing toe. "Hands steady enough to perform surgery around the spinal cord yet somehow, she still manages to trip over everything as soon as she gets home! Why was I made like this?" Whimpering and slowly taking off her long, dragon-themed socks, "fuck" she hissed, assessing the damage to her poor pinky toe.
Finally, deciding she would live with just a nasty bruise, the dragon lover got off of her bedroom floor and flipped her middle finger up at her wooden bed frame with elvish carvings on it. Was it mature or necessary? No. Did it make her feel a little better? Definitely.
Charlie then sauntered over to her desk that was against the wall between her bed and bathroom. She sat down and got a notebook out that had elves, faeries, and dragons on the cover. Then, she grabbed a book from her shelf and set it down next to her notebook. The book was a dictionary of ancient elvish languages. Charlie always had an interest in the magical, and sometimes dangerous, Fae realm. Afterall her middle name was Nithe, in old Norse it meant "dragon" or "serpent". Charlie loved her middle name, though it was so odd she never told anyone what it was. Oh, how she longed to be caught in a Fae trap and be sucked into another dimension.
After around 30 minutes of studying and copying down the strange language, Charlie decided it was time to stop. "Alright, better get to bed so that I won't be late for lunch with Lullah tomorrow." Tallulah, being the most amazing person to ever walk this earth, always made sure that on the rare occasion they got time off from work they would have a nice lunch together. After double checking that the front and balcony doors were locked, she made sure all the lights were off before retreating to her room. Charlie plugged up her phone and slid into bed.
However, as soon as her head hit the pillow, she heard the faint meow of her little cat Hockey Stick. Hockey was a tuxedo cat with dark amber eyes, having little white only on his face, creating the shape of a hockey stick. "Oh, honey I'm so sorry, I completely forgot to feed my boy." Getting up, she immediately scooped the lanky furball into her arms, Hockey purred and nestled into his owner's chest. "How could I forget my bestest baby boy?" Charlie cooed. "I'm so sorry buddy, hospital brain."
Charlie walked down the hallway to the living room and then took a left into another short hallway. As the two entered the kitchen on the right, Hockey jumped onto the counter and waited patiently like the distinguished little gentleman he is. A soft melody rang through the space, specifically the melody of Hidden in the Sand by Tally Hall. Charlie was humming and leisurely spinning around the kitchen as she prepared Hockey's wet tuna. She always made sure to get the best for her drama king. She wasn't anywhere near what most people would call wealthy, nevertheless they got by just fine despite having no financial aid from her parents anymore.
Hockey was getting impatient and let out a loud meow to signal that he was hungry and getting hangry. Charlie giggled and put the plate down next to her best furry friend. "Such a drama king bud. I know all that dry food you get throughout the day isn't nearly as tasty as this stuff."
The young doctor didn't really like feeding Hockey kibble considering he has had trouble keeping weight due to a GI problem that their vet still can't diagnose. Luckily, they found an exceptional diet and feeding schedule that keeps everyone happy and healthy. Charlie bought a timed dispenser for Hockey as soon as she found him on the street outside her apartment building.
She knew her schedule, working mainly at the ER, was extremely unpredictable and absolutely refused to be neglectful in any way towards an animal. Food is dispensed twice a day usually, it's enough food where Hockey eats until he's full and usually has leftovers to snack on until the next meal.
Of course, the schedule is always changing with emergency calls and overflow in the ER though luckily, she could dispense some food with her phone if needed. No matter what, Charlie always makes time to sit down with Hockey while he eats. "All done? Good, because I'm tired as hell bud." She grabs the dish, washes it in the sink, and swiftly puts it away. "Hockey," the woman calls, "bedtime, go on to your house." Hockey's "house", as Charlie calls it, is a gothic styled red and black cat tree with plenty of nooks for the small cat to snuggle into. Charlie had planned on training Hockey so that he would sleep on his tree in the living room, however he did it all by himself. Which made Charlie's life so much easier, considering she was one step closer to having a restful sleep.
"Finally," she says as she closes her door and flops down into her bed, "fleep." Lifting her face out of her pillow, she quickly snatched her favorite Toothless plushy and held it tight to her chest. Yes, she still sleeps with a stuffed animal, if you don't, you had a decent childhood.
