The sun shown down brighter than usual. Charlie groaned and rolled over but to her dismay it seemed like the light was coming from all sides. She heard Hockey meow a few feet away. 'I thought I closed my door?' Charlie thought, confused as to how her cat was in her room. She grabbed around her trying to find a blanket or pillow to shield her from the harsh rays. Not being able to find any such thing, she decided to simply push her face into her bed. When she did, the young woman gasped and sat up so quick she was surprised she didn't snap her neck. "What the fuck..." Charlie murmured when she realized it was not her bed beneath her, but grass. "How in the hells did I get outside?"
Finally gazing at her surroundings, the young woman realized that she was indeed outside. It looked like she was at what seemed to be a park. Looking furthermore, she noticed she was in a large field. Hockey rubbed up against her side and walked a few feet away to lay in the grass. Charlie deduced she must have either sleepwalked or this was a very detailed dream. Worried it was the former, the young doctor checked herself for any injuries but when her hands went to her head, she realized she was wearing a beanie.
Confused, Charlie took off the beanie and examined it. She didn't remember taking any beanies out of her winter clothing tub, furthering her suspicion that this was simply an odd dream. The beanie was white, and looking at the rim, she noticed an odd symbol. Though she never learned how to pronounce it, she recognized the word was Elvish and meant "change". 'Odd.' Charlie had never seen the Elvish she studied on any clothing, so what caused this detail of her dream?
She reached up to check her head for injuries again. Her fingers combed through her hair not feeling anything odd but, she gasped when she felt her ears. They were pointy, and really long. Panicked, Charlie searched her pockets for the hand-held mirror she always kept with her. It was small, rectangular, and had a crystal dragon on the back. A gift from her grandmother, Charlize Sangster, before the old woman died when Charlie was 7.
She found it in a lower pocket of her cargo pants, and pulled it in front of her quickly. Her jaw dropped; the ears looked so cool. They were long and slender, looking completely unnatural. The tips were a smokey black, with pitch black speckles, that faded nicely into her skin tone. she traced her ear gently with her fingertips but there was one smaller detail she almost missed. On the tips, there was a tattoo of the moon's phases. Waning crescent, Third Quarter, Full moon, First Quarter, Waxing crescent. "Woah", Charlie breathed in disbelief. 'If this is a dream then it's a vivid one.'
She still had most of her ear piercings except for her second lobes. Her first lobes were filled by earrings she didn't recognize as her own. However, they were stunningly gorgeous. The earrings were silver dangles made of a wide crescent moon, stars, and pearls. The industrial piercing was filled by a string of pearls and while it wasn't Charlie's usual choice for an industrial, she had to admit it was nice. There was only one piercing that resided in the smokey black of her ear tips, Charlie assumed it was equal to a helix on a normal ear. It was very small but still beautiful, there was a pentagram surrounded by two crescent moons and a star dangling down. The jewelry looked fairly expensive, more than Charlie would ever spend on jewelry.
"Incredible, but where are my seconds? There isn't even a scar where they're supposed to be." Charlie wondered aloud. If it was a dream she doubted such a detail would be removed, she loved all her piercings even if her job restricted her from having all the ones she wanted. In all honesty, Charlie was surprised the dream didn't feature any extra piercings. Though everything that had happened made it impossible for it not to be a dream.
Charlie felt chills run through her arms. Deciding everything was getting too weird and realistic for her liking, the doctor performed the same act that caused her to wake up every time she had a nightmare. After she grabbed the small Swiss knife hidden in her belt she opened the sharp blade, pressed it against her left palm, and braced herself to wake up. Only she didn't wake up, Charlie let out a sharp hiss and dropped the knife into the grass. At the same time she clutched her palm to her chest and started to rock back and forth.
