I walked briskly, humming the melody of the song that first came to my mind. The role of a guide gave me wings. Or maybe it was the fact that for the first time in forever I had someone to open my mouth to who wasn't Danny or my mirror image? I didn't know and I didn't investigate. I preferred to use it while this condition lasted.

I turned around and started walking backwards, taking a look at my trip.

Frypan and Minho were right behind me, although it would be more accurate to say that they barely dragged their feet. Aris was lurking behind them. From what I noticed, he wasn't very talkative. Then there were Newt, Thomas and Winston. Hugging each other, they helped the latter walk, who, to everyone's relief, woke up but still didn't have enough strength to stand, let alone take steps. The procession ended with an offended Teresa, who... well, was offended.

-How are you holding up? - I asked. - It's close, really.

-You said the same thing twenty minutes ago! - Minho groaned and wiped the sweat from his forehead. - I'm sweating like a pig. And because of my bad luck, waterfalls are already pouring down.

-Nobody asked - Frypan, who was walking next to him, muttered, wrinkling his nose playfully.

-I swear, a few more steps and we'll be home - I assured her and returned to normal walking when I saw the road ahead.

-I feel like she's rocking again. I think I'll start counting these few steps.

I laughed out loud at the Asian's comment, which I probably wasn't supposed to hear. I raised my head high. The sun slowly disappeared behind the buildings, taking the blue sky and light with it. But it forgot, perhaps intentionally, about the heat that was still a nuisance to us. But as I said, we were really close.

-Isn't that strange?

I frowned and turned to face them again. Teresa, who asked this question, looked at everyone with a look of disbelief on her face. She hadn't said much in the last twenty minutes. She pouted and was the last to go, only interjecting her half-words from time to time. That's why I was so curious about what he had to tell us.

-We follow her like docile lambs! - she pointed her finger at me. - We don't know anything about her! We don't even know her name!

Hearing her words, I slapped my forehead with an open hand. I didn't know you could be that stupid. Because how could I not introduce myself to them at the beginning? I was just glad that Danny was nowhere to be found to scold my manners.

-Gee, you're right - I muttered, a bit embarrassed. - I'm Ellie.

-Hi Ellie!- Minho smiled and waved his hand at me. He shot a mocking glance at the brunette. - Have you heard? This is Ellie. You've got what you wanted, now go back to silence because it worked better for you.

-shut up you stink!

-I wasn't talking to you, Tommy!

I burst into laughter, which then got stuck in my throat. I stopped abruptly and the rest followed my example. I quieted the thoughts in my head and focused entirely on listening to my surroundings. Finally, my eyes widened.

-Hiding yourself!

I didn't have to repeat myself twice. Everyone quickly started jumping under larger pieces of rubble, but it wasn't so easy with Winston. Newt and Thomas began to pull him into the shadow of what might once have been part of the dream, and I stared in horror at the plane approaching us, still standing in plain sight. I wanted to make sure they were safe. I no longer even paid attention to the fear that gripped my heart once again that day. I had to be so damn sure.
