For @Alicerum54
And thank u so much @PTXual for helpin a sister out. "Great, just great." Kirstie sighed as she set her phone down beside her. She slumped into her couch and mentally replayed the conversation she just had.
"I can't believe you didn't get the invitation! My wedding is a week from today. You have to come Kirstie, you're one of my best friends!"
"Yeah, I'll totally come. If you just wanna text me the details I'll make some changes in my schedule and fly out there. I wouldn't miss it for the world."
"Yay! Oh, and you must bring that boyfriend of yours! I've been dying to meet him."
"I, uh...of course."
"Great! I'll see you next week then...at my WEDDING!"
Boyfriend...she had one of those. They broke up two weeks ago. Kirstie forgot that she only told the guys. No one else knew. 'I suppose I could have just told her he couldn't make it,' she thought. 'Too late for that now, Kirstin.' She stood from her couch and went to the kitchen for a bottle of water. Kirstie leaned against her counter and sipped while thinking. 'I have to bring someone now. I can't bring Scott or Mitch. She knows both of them. Maybe I could ask Avi. Or Kevin. I'll do that.' Kirstie patted herself down before remembering that she left her phone in the other room. She sat down on the couch and started a group message.
K: Hey guys. Can I be awful and ask a huuuuge favor from one of you...?
A: Of course. What do you need?
Kev: Anything for you Kirs-Kirs
K: Awe. Well an old friend of mine is getting married next week and she kinda asked me to bring my boyfriend. I can't do that, for obvious reasons. So I was hoping I could bring one of you instead
Kev: Do you know what day next week?
K: Friday I think
Kev: Oh. I'm sorry Kirstie. I'm actually going out with this girl that night...
K: Is she the one with the super pretty eyes? :D
Kev: Yeah :)
A: Guys, you're getting sidetracked
K: Oh yeah lol. Don't sweat it Kev. And enjoy your date ;D
Kev: The wink makes it weird. But I will, thank you
K: Soooo...Avi?
A: I just have to go to the wedding with you?
K: And pretend to be my boyfriend :|
A: I think I can manage that :)
K: Really?
A: Yes
K: Yay! Thank you so much Avi! Btw we fly out to Texas on Thursday
A: Sounds good
Kirstie beamed a victorious smile. 'Maybe this wedding won't be so bad after all.'
Thursday Afternoon
Avi and Kirstie sat next to each other on the plane. They were scheduled to land in a little under an hour. Avi looked over at Kirstie, who was playing a game on her phone, and gently nudged her shoulder. She hit the pause button and looked back up at him. "So you never told me about your friend. And if I'm going to her wedding, I'd at least like to know who she is."
"Oh, of course." Kirstie put her phone away and turned a little to face Avi. "Her name is Ann. Scott, Mitch, and I were friends with her through and after high school. She's marrying Jared. They've been together for years."
"So that's why you couldn't bring Scott or Mitch."
"Yep. And I saw you dance at Scott's sister's wedding. You know how to have a good time, which made you a pretty great contender." Avi thought back to that night and chuckled. "So I have a question for you."
"Okay..." Avi eyed her cautiously.
"Why would you agree to fly out to Texas to go to the wedding of someone you don't know anything about?"
"Because you needed a fake boyfriend. And you asked so nicely..." Kirstie shot him a look that told him she wasn't buying it. "It was literally just because you asked. You needed a favor and I'm a decent human being so I decided to help." Avi shrugged. Kirstie kept her stare but softened and decided that it was a good enough answer. She couldn't help but feel like there was another reason though.
The ride to the hotel was relatively silent. As soon as they pulled up under the awning Kirstie and Avi flung their doors open as fast as they could, desperate to escape their cab driver who smelled like piña coladas and cheap cologne. "If you wanna unload I'll get us checked in." Kirstie said to Avi. Avi looked at her and then inside the hotel. The man at the desk had his eyes locked on Kirstie, clearly checking her out.
"Actually, how about I check us in. I don't like the way he's looking at you."
"Oh come on Avi. I'm sure he's just-" Kirstie turned around and made eye contact with the employee. His eyes shifted ever so slightly lower and Kirstie became extremely uncomfortable. "Y-you can check us in...please." She ran to the other side of the cab where she would mostly be hidden. Avi narrowed his eyes and practically stormed into the hotel lobby.
"No one makes my Kirstie feel uncomfortable," he mumbled to himself. He approached the counter and came face to face with the creeper.
"Hello! Checking in?" Avi already didn't like him. And the man's unsettling tone when he said "checking in" wasn't helping.
"Yes, we are. We had two rooms reserved."
"Alright. What name was the reservation made under?"
"Maldonado." The man nodded and typed away on his computer. "Okay, I have you down for two connected rooms. Is that correct?"
"Yes it is." Avi stiffened as the man leaned closer to him.
"So you aren't sharing a room with her?" Avi stood taller and leaned in close the employee's face.
"And why is it you're asking?"
"I just don't understand why any man in his right mind wouldn't want to sleep with her is all," he said grinning. "She's mighty fine looking." Avi was going to punch this guy in the face pretty soon.
"Watch it. That my girl you're talking about."
"Oh? Then why aren't you sharing a room?"
'Think fast Avi...' "We are. The other room was for a friend who's no longer coming."
"So you don't need that other room then?"
"No," Avi stated firmly, "we don't."
"I'd be happy to upgrade that to a suite with a king sized bed. It costs the same. And there's a hot tub in the room." The man wiggled his eyebrows. Avi backed off of him.
"Sounds great," he replied, still fuming. Avi watched as his new enemy typed and clicked on the computer.
"All set! Just sign here and I'll grab your room key." Avi scribbled his signature down on the paper and slid it across the counter. As soon he was handed the card to their room Avi nearly bolted back outside. He walked straight up to Kirstie and pulled her into an unexpected hug.
"You know how I'm pretending to be your boyfriend at the wedding?"
"Yes...?" Kirstie pulled away to look up at him.
"We're starting early. We're sharing a king suite. Creepy ass dude made too many comments. I wasn't going to leave you alone in a room by yourself."
"Oh...okay..." Kirstie looked away and wondered if they should just find a different hotel.
"But look on the bright side," Avi said while grabbing their suitcases. "Now we have a hot tub."
Avi slid the card into the door. After hearing it click and beep he pushed the door open to reveal a beautiful room. The bed was neatly made and huge. There was a flatscreen tv on the wall across from the bed. Under it was a mini bar and fridge. A desk sat in the corner by the window along with a few chairs and a love seat. And last but not least, the hot tub was in the corner next to the bathroom. "Wow..." Kirstie said as she entered the room, "impressive."
"Yeah. Almost makes up for how much I wanted to kill the guy downstairs." Kirstie gave him a warm smile.
"Thank you for dealing with him."
"Anything to keep him away from you." Avi smiled back at her. She shook her head and put her suitcase at the foot of the bed. "I'll take the couch if you want." He walked to the other side of the room to put his suitcase by the couch.
"What? No, Avi. Sleep in the bed, like a normal adult."
"Well you're not taking the couch."
"No, I'm not."
"Then who's-" and then it clicked. "Oh. Are you sure? 'Cause if you're not comfortable with it..."
"Avi. We're both going to sleep in the damn bed. Kay?" Avi stared at her like a deer in headlights. He eventually nodded.
"I'm sorry." Avi sulked, afraid that he had upset her. Kirstie sighed and realized her tone had sounded a little harsh. She walked up to him and wrapped her arms around his waist.
"Me too."
That night Avi waited for Kirstie to emerge from the bathroom so he could finish getting ready for bed. He looked up from putting the clothes he had worn that day into his bag and saw her enter the room. She had washed off what little makeup she had on. Avi also took note of how cute she looked in her shorts and oversized t-shirt. He smiled to himself before grabbing his toothbrush and entering the bathroom. After brushing his teeth and taking his hair out of its normal bun, Avi joined Kirstie on the bed. He sat and laid down as close to the edge as possible. Kirstie looked over and cocked her head at him. "Why are you so far away?"
"Just wanted to make sure you had enough space." Avi said, facing away from her. Kirstie rolled her eyes and turned out the light.
"You don't have to lay on the very edge of the bed," she chuckled. "I'm pretty small, I'll have plenty of room." Avi wiggled until he had scooted nearly a foot towards the center of the mattress. He rolled over to face her.
"Is that better?" The sass in his voice was evident.
"Much. Although I still don't know what you were worried about in the first place."
"I just don't want to accidentally roll over into your personal bubble in the middle of the night. There's nothing worse than unwanted, unintentional spooning," he joked. Kirstie laughed and then was suddenly struck with a great idea. She lifted the covers and sprung over to Avi. She laid on her side and pressed her back into Avi's front.
"There. Now it's wanted and intentional, so you have nothing to worry about." Avi didn't move, frozen from shock. He slowly allowed his arms to snake around her waist and hold her in place. Kirstie smiled and wondered for a brief moment what it would be like to sleep in Avi's arms every night. She mentally smacked herself the second it crossed her mind. 'The night before you're supposed to pretend to be dating is not the time to develop feelings for someone.' Kirstie scolded herself. 'And you've only been single for like two weeks. Chill out.' Avi pulled her closer and quietly snored. 'Well, I guess I may as well enjoy it while I can.' She snuggled into him and quickly fell asleep.
The next morning Kirstie woke up alone. She frowned and scanned the room, then heard the shower turn off. Minutes later Avi stepped into the room with a towel wrapped around his hips. Kirstie didn't even try to stop herself from staring. Avi noticed and blushed. "I uh, I forgot to bring clothes in there with me..." he said bashfully. He walked over to his suitcase and grabbed an outfit. Kirstie smirked when he subconsciously flexed while walking past her again. 'Damn him...' Kirstie thought, 'damn him for looking so good.' The sight of him lingered in her mind until she shook her head. Not knowing what else to do, she texted Scott and Mitch.
K: Girls, my feelings are confused. Help.
M: I guess we should skip the "how's Texas" part then
S: What's going on?
M: Tell mommy and daddy what's wrong
K: I'll just say it. I think I like Avi
M: Oh my god. Yes. Finally. Thank you God
S: Y'ALL ARE GONNA BE SO CUTE TOGETHER
K: Guys, I don't even know if he likes me back. And I just realized I had a small crush on him last night.
S: Of course he likes you back. Have you really not noticed?
K: Not really...
M: Girl, I know you're blind without your glasses, but you're not that blind. He clearly likes you
S: Kevin told us if it helps.
M: Wait, what happened last night that made you realize you liked him?
Kirstie was about to reply when Avi came out of the bathroom again. "Bathroom's all yours if you need it."
"Okay." Kirstie smiled at him and then returned to her phone.
K: I'll text you guys later. Avi's out of the bathroom and I need to get ready. Bye!
S: But I wanna know what happened!
M: Don't you walk away from me missy!
S: Hold up. Are you guys sharing a hotel room?
M: Kirstin!
M: You get back here this instant!
Kirstie laughed and left her phone on the bed and headed for the shower.
She sang softly as she scrubbed her hair and body. Thoughts of Avi periodically distracted her. He looked really nice in that towel...which reminded her that she also forgot to bring clothes into the bathroom with her. She sighed and turned the water off. 'Maybe I can use this as a chance to see if he really does feel the same. Just tease him a little and see how he reacts.' She wrapped the towel around her body. 'Here goes nothing.' Kirstie opened the door and stepped into their room. She peeked around the corner and then timidly walked out in front of Avi. His eyes were glued to her. It was also possible that he momentarily forgot how to breathe. Kirstie felt him staring. "You did it to me, it's only fair," she smirked. He watched her turn towards him and then bend over to reach into her suitcase. Her movements caused her towel to loosen, giving Avi a pretty good view if he looked. But he averted his eyes, trying to remain a gentleman. His eyes shot back to her when a small squeak escaped her lips. Kirstie's towel had fallen when she stood back up. Her hand was all that held it to the front her body, the back of her was completely exposed. She stood still, afraid to move. Avi stood from the bed, eyes looking anywhere but at Kirstie, and approached her. He reached for her and grabbed both ends of the towel and wrapped her back up. "Thanks," she smiled awkwardly. Avi finally looked at her again and smiled back.
"No problem." Kirstie scurried back to the bathroom to get dressed.
'Well that couldn't have gone any worse. You were supposed to tease him, not flash him.'
Avi sat back down on the edge of the bed. He was pleased when he found Kirstie staring at him when he was in the towel, but when the tables turned he just felt like a creep. His hand ran through his damp hair as he tried to forget the image of her body wrapped in the soft white cotton. 'Think of something that makes you uncomfortable...like Kevin in a towel.' Avi frowned at the less pleasant visual.
"Whatcha thinkin' about?" Kirstie asked after seeing his facial expression.
"It's nothing."
"Are you sure? You seemed...disturbed."
"Just thinking about a weird video Kevin showed me a while ago."
"Okay." Kirstie looked him over, not buying the story but going along anyway. She quickly grabbed her makeup bag and went back to the bathroom. Avi sighed and laid down. This was gonna be a long night.
Kirstie walked into the room and noticed Avi staring at the ceiling. Rather than simply ask if he was bored, she decided to jump onto the bed and plop down next to him on her stomach. Avi was startled when he bounced on the mattress. He looked over to see Kirstie smiling and staring at him. Avi smiled back and stood up on the bed. He jumped as high as the ceiling would allow him and belly flopped beside Kirstie. His weight bounced her into the air and almost off the bed. She flailed and landed rather ungracefully. One arm was folded awkwardly beneath her body, the other dangling off the bed. As soon as she got her laughter under control, she looked to Avi. "I don't think I can move without falling off..." She wiggled a bit causing her to slide ever so slightly off the bed. Avi reached forward and lifted her body off of her arm and flipped her over and away from the edge. He let her go and she sat up.
"Good?" Avi smiled at her.
"Yeah. Thanks." She grinned, refusing to look at him in fear that she'd blush.
"So what do you wanna do until the wedding?" Avi asked.
"I was thinking we could go grab lunch or something?"
"I'm always down for food. Where do you want to go?"
"There's a little pizza place within walking distance of here. Just right down the street."
"Sounds great. Let's go." They slipped their shoes on and left the hotel room. Before leaving the lobby Avi made sure to shoot a glare at the creepy guy at the desk.
After eating the best meat lovers pizza either of them had ever had, Avi and Kirstie returned to the hotel room to get ready for the wedding. Avi offered to get dressed in the bathroom so Kirstie could have more space. She argued, but Avi locked himself in the bathroom. Kirstie laughed at his childish behavior and undressed. She slipped her dress on, but was unable to zip it all the way up. Kirstie walked over to the bathroom door and raised her hand to knock but stopped when Avi spoke. "Is it alright if I come out?"
"That depends. Do you have clothes on this time or are you in the towel again?" Avi could practically hear her smirking.
"Which do you prefer?"
"I haven't decided yet."
"I have clothes on."
"I guess that will do." Avi came out in a slim fit button up and a black tie. He noticed Kirstie staring at him again and couldn't help but smile.
"Better than the towel?"
"It's a close call." She gave him a playful wink before turning around. "Do you think you could help me with the zipper?"
"Sure thing." Avi stepped forward and grabbed hold of the tiny zipper and pulled it down.
"Avi..." Kirstie glanced back at him.
"Oh, you wanted the zipper up!" Avi spoke sarcastically. "Personally I think it looks great like this but whatever." Kirstie smiled and shook her head. She felt the zipper go in the right direction this time and turned around and thanked Avi for his help.
"So what do you think? Does it top the towel?" Kirstie spun in her dress.
"I don't know, that towel really did it for you."
"Maybe we should have just worn towels to the wedding."
"Wouldn't work. You're not suppose to wear white to a wedding. And that might be a little distracting. The attention needs to be on the bride, not the guests in nothing but towels."
"Lame. The dress code for our wedding should be strictly towels." They shared a good laugh before Avi realized what she had said. <i>'Our wedding...'</i> A huge smile formed on his face at the thought. "Anyways," Kirstie brought him back to earth, "we should get going."
The ceremony was beautiful. There was a brief problem regarding a few bees wanting to attend to the flowers held by the bridesmaids, but it was nothing they couldn't handle. Once Ann and Jared were officially married, everyone drove to the reception that was being held in a building just a block away. Then after the traditional dances were had and the speeches were delivered, the real party began. Kirstie and Avi spent most of the evening seated at their table sipping punch and eating tiny deserts. Finally Ann was able to make it over the them to chat.
"Kirstie! I'm so happy you made it!" Ann pulled Kirstie into a tight hug.
"Me too! Your ceremony was gorgeous, how did you find that little park?" Avi watched the ladies carry on and catch up. He smiled and admired how compassionate Kirstie was when talking to people.
"I see your taste in men has improved," Ann snickered.
"Oh shut up." Kirstie reached for Avi's hand. "Ann, this is Avi." Avi stood and reached his free hand out to shake Ann's.
"Pleasure to meet you."
"Pleasure's all mine. I can tell you make Kirstie really happy." Ann said with a wide smile. Avi returned it and gave Kirstie a quick kiss on the top of her head. "Well I still have a few tables to get to, so I'll leave you two alone. But I better see y'all on the dance floor later!"
"No promises," Kirstie laughed.
"She seemed really nice." Avi said.
"Yeah. I really miss her sometimes."
"You know what will help with that?"
"More punch?" Kirstie smirked and raised an eyebrow.
"Not just any punch. The punch on that other table is spiked!" Avi beamed. Kirstie giggled and let him lead her to get a glass of fun punch.
They sat and watched the crowd of dancing people for half an hour. Ann was in sight again, on the outskirts of the mob. She looked over and locked eyes with Kirstie. Kirstie waved, Ann pointed at the two of them and motioned for them to come dance. Kirstie shook her head. Suddenly the DJ's voice came over the speaker. "Alright everyone. This has been fun and all, but the time has come for a slow dance. I want to see all the couples out on the floor!" Ann looked over at Kirstie and Avi again before going to grab her husband.
"Come on." Avi said, standing from his seat.
"What?"
"He said all the couples out on the floor. And if we don't, I'm pretty sure Ann will come over here and kill us." He held his hand out for her. Kirstie hesitantly grabbed it and walked with him to the dance floor. The music began to softly fill the room. Avi placed his hands on her waist, Kirstie wrapped her arms around his neck. They swayed to the beat, eyes never leaving each other's. Avi pulled her in closer so that their fronts were touching and it wasn't so much like an awkward middle school dance anymore. Kirstie's heart beat faster as she fell even harder for him. She fell for his beautiful eyes and perfect smile, and his godly voice. The voice that sends shivers down her spine and weakens her knees. She fell for his maturity and spontaneous playfulness. He could always make her smile or laugh, no matter how serious he was seconds before. She fell for his passion for the things he loves, and the way she catches him looking at her. The way he was looking at her right now.
Avi tucked a stray strand of hair behind her ear, his hand caressing her cheek on its way back. Kirstie shuddered and closed her eyes. She thought for a brief second about what she was about to do, then came to realize that she could no longer resist the temptation. Her hands cupped his face as she leaned in and gently kissed him. Avi's initial shock didn't even last a second before he kissed her back. He pulled her body in even closer as their lips parted. "Was that a real kiss or a pretend couple kiss?" Avi whispered.
"Definitely a real one."
"In that case, would you like to be a real couple?" Avi smiled hopefully.
"I would like nothing more." She leaned in and kissed him again, then rested her head on his shoulder. "You know, I think I might actually like weddings now."
"Is that so?"
"Yeah." They continued to sway for the last few seconds of the song. Avi took her hands in his and Kirstie looked him in the eyes. "But it would've been better if we could have just worn the towels."
