I hardly feel the sting as my 8th shot of vodka runs down my throat, instead leaving a bitter aftertaste that lingers in my mouth.

"I'd do it because I thought you loved me as much as I loved you."

I'm a fucking idiot for even getting involved with her in the first place, all I had to do was keep an eye on her for a few weeks until things had calmed down and we knew the Spanish mafia wouldn't put a target on her back.

But I couldn't help myself. Her smell, her laugh, her eyes, the way she felt comfortable enough to talk for hours. It corrupted me.

A woman walks up to me, looking way more excited than she'll be walking out of here. "Hey handsome, you alone here tonight?"

I grit my teeth, "Piss off."

She switches through emotions, first looking at me with her eyes wide before narrowing them and looking hurt. "Fine, whatever." She walks away just as the door to the lounge opens, and Valerio walks in.

He eyes me suspiciously after seeing the girl walk by him, then sitting down beside me and leaning back.

"Alright, tell me what happened." He pours himself a drink.

"I'm a fucking idiot" I run a hand through my hair, exhaling.

"That's not new, Lorenzo." He says, unimpressed.

My jaw tightens, asshole. He knows that I left her, but he doesn't know that I got engaged a week later.

"I got engaged a week ago. Emilia Abeline."

Valerio stops for a moment, turns to me with a shocked gaze. "Jesus."  His expression fades, instead looking away and shakes his head.

"That's worse than what I did, and I did bad." He flinches.

"What was I supposed to do? You know what happens if I'm not married soon."

There's a minute of silence, but I can hear him thinking. "So change the rules." He shrugs.

I look at him. "What?" A pause. "I can't. He'll take everything from us."

"Yeah" he agrees."If you don't get married. But those aren't the rules I'm talking about"

Confusion rushes through me, until realization hits me and I wake up a little. That rule.
