I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw Sidharth standing at the door of my pet care. Just when I thought I'd shaken him off, there he was again, smiling as if he belonged here.
"You?" I couldn't mask my shock. "What are you doing here?" I whisper-yelled, trying to keep my voice down so as not to alarm the animals.
"Hi," he greeted me, completely ignoring my tone.
"What are you doing here?" I repeated, moving aside to let him in, hoping he would at least have the decency to explain himself quickly.
"I was thinking of buying a pet for myself," he said casually, as if he hadn't been harassing me for days.
"Liar," I shot back, crossing my arms over my chest, a protective gesture against his invasive presence.
"Suggest something good for me," he added, not missing a beat.
I wanted to scream at him to leave, to never come back, but I knew better. Yelling would only give him the satisfaction of knowing he'd gotten under my skin. Instead, I took a deep breath, trying to remain professional. "Fine. Do you have any preferences?" I asked, my tone clipped.
"Something small and cute, like you," he said with that infuriating smirk.
I rolled my eyes, determined not to rise to the bait. "I'll show you some options," I said, walking towards the cages.
As I showed him around, I couldn't help but notice his genuine interest in the animals. It was hard to reconcile this side of him with the persistent, borderline obsessive man who wouldn't leave me alone. I hated that he was making me see another side of him, a side that wasn't entirely awful.
"This one's a Pomeranian," I said, pointing to a small, fluffy dog that was eagerly wagging its tail. "They're very loyal and friendly, perfect for someone looking for companionship."
He crouched down, sticking his fingers through the bars to pet the dog, who licked them enthusiastically. "Hey there, buddy," he murmured, his voice soft.
I watched, arms still crossed, feeling a pang of something I couldn't quite identify. It wasn't a pity, exactly. Maybe it was the faintest trace of understanding.
"He's cute," Sidharth said, looking up at me with that damned smile again.
"Yes, he is," I replied, my voice neutral. "Do you want to hold him?"
"Sure," he said, standing up as I unlocked the cage and gently lifted the Pomeranian out. The dog immediately snuggled into Sidharth's arms, making my heart clench.
