The cold breeze hits her face through the open window. The sunlight illuminating the gloomy classroom. She stared off into the distance, thinking. Just thinking. She felt that she had heard someone calling her name. Wasn't it too late to be in school?
"Zyon Black!"
"Huh?"
She exclaimed as she finally snapped back into reality. The teacher had been calling her name for the past minute.
"I was saying that for the spring festival this year, you all will be assigned projects that you'll be doing in groups of 2. Daryl and Marcus, Laken and Charlie, and Zyon and Lacey. You have been informed of your duties. Class is dismissed."
The class starts packing up to head home, while Zyon's eyes are looking for Lacey. Wait, Lacey? I don't even talk to her.
She gets up from her seat and walks over to Lacey who is putting her books into her backpack. "Hey!" Zyon excitingly says. Her warm and welcoming voice echoing in Lacey's ears. "Hi" she replies.
"I'm excited to be working with you! But could you please tell me what we're supposed to be doing? I wasn't really paying attention to the teacher-"
"Yeah sure, we're supposed to paint a mural. Specifically something related to cherry blossoms.""Hey, I love cherry blossoms!"
Lacey looked up, a small smile tugging at her lips. "Really? I think they're beautiful too."
Zyon beamed, her enthusiasm contagious. "Awesome! Do you want to meet up this weekend to brainstorm ideas? We could go to the park or the library."
Lacey hesitated for a moment. She wasn't used to spending time with someone as outgoing as Zyon. "Sure, the park sounds nice.""Great! How about Saturday at 5 PM? By the cherry blossom trees?"
"Okay, see you then," Lacey replied, zipping up her backpack and heading towards the door. As Zyon watched her leave, she felt a strange mix of excitement and nervousness. She hadn't really talked to Lacey before, but something about her intrigued her.
The weekend arrived quickly, and Zyon found herself walking towards the park, her heart racing a little. She spotted Lacey sitting on a bench near the cherry blossom trees, reading a book. Her long blonde hair blowing away with the wind.
"Hey, Lacey!" Zyon called out, waving as she approached. Lacey looked up, her face lighting up as soon as she saw Zyon. "Hi, Zyon." Zyon sat down next to her, taking a moment to appreciate the beauty of the cherry blossoms around them.
"So, any ideas for our mural?" Lacey closed her book and thought for a moment. "I was thinking that we could do something that represents growth and hope. Cherry blossoms bloom in spring, symbolizing new beginnings."
"I love that idea!" Zyon said, her eyes sparkling. "Maybe we could incorporate different stages of the cherry blossom, from bud to full bloom, to show the process of growth."Lacey nodded, her excitement growing. "That sounds perfect. And maybe we can add a background that shows the transition from winter to spring, with the snow melting away."
"Yes! We could even include some animals or people enjoying the cherry blossoms. It could be a whole scene of life and renewal," Zyon added.
They spent the next few hours sketching out their ideas. For the first time in a long time, Lacey felt genuinely connected to someone. And suddenly, the
orange sunset bled into nightfall. As they wrapped up their brainstorming session, Zyon turned to Lacey with a smile and said, "I'm really happy that I'm doing this with you, Lacey. I think this is going to be something special."
Lacey felt a warmth spreading through her chest. "Yeah! Me too."
As they parted ways, they could feel an anticipation for what was to come. Little did they know, this project was going to change their lives forever.
