Newt

"Guys! Get up!" Yells chuck and I rise from my sitting position to join him.

We all stand outside the maze doors now waiting for them to open. My heart is heavy and I have little to no hope.
The maze doors clank then slowly start to open. Chuck and miles are standing in front in of me. But as I peer into the maze I see nothing.

"I told you guys.. There not coming back." I turn my back to the maze making my way across the grass.

"No way.." it's Zart I quickly turned my head back to the maze doors I see something...

"Yeah!" Yells miles there they are, Minho, Alby, Thomas... and Elaine, my Elaine right there my eyes fill with tears but I blink they away. Her eyes meet mine as she supports Albys weight. As they cross the line gladers take Alby from them and they slump down to the ground. I move over to Elaine.

"Hey.." she breathes i kneel down next to her letting her lean on me as they all catch their breath.

"Hey.." I say moving my hand up and down her back. "Don't do that again." She snickers raising her arm and saluting me.

"Elaine what happened to you arm?" Asks Jeff inspecting her arm and shoulder. I look too seeing bruised flesh scrapes and a long cut from elbow to shoulder it's deep and looks infected.

"Griever." She answered shortly pointing to Alby with her good arm. "Take care of him." She says Jeff nods tending back to Alby.

"You saw a griever?!" Asks miles.

"Yeah we saw one." Her and Thomas reply in unison.

"They didn't just see it. They killed it." Elaine snorted burrowing seeping under my arm.

"Well don't say it like that." She huffs.

I support Elaine's weight as we make our way across the field I thought I lost her, so I'm not letting her out of my sight for the foreseeable future.

"Why did you do it?" I ask she stops in her tracks taking her hand from around my waist and turning to me.

"I... don't know." She says raising her uninjured arm and pushing my hair gently off my forehead "I just wanted to help." She turns away from me but I pull her back gently kissing her forehead and tucking loose hairs behind her ears.

"Thankyou." I say holding her close

"For what?" She asks looking up at my with an eyebrow raised.

"Not dying." I say she smiles "I couldn't have handled that today."

"Well... if it's cool with you I'm gonna try not to die tomorrow either." A cheeky smile on her face I laugh gently wrapping my arms around her pulling her close.

"Gally called a meeting, do you want to go straight there or do you want to change?" I ask her she sighs, but doesn't move away from me she instead moves even closer resting her head on my chest.

"Let's get it over with i suppose." She murmurs softly.

"Things are changing, there's no denying that. First Ben gets stung in broad daylight and then Alby." Says Gally. We are all in the homestead, Elaine and Thomas are sitting in the middle like horses up for auction.

They both look like hell.

Elaine is sitting defensively arms crossed across her chest, while Thomas next to her looks guilty and worried "and now our new greenie and Elaine have taken it upon themselves to go into the maze. Which is a clear violation of our rules here."

"Yeah but they saved Albys life." I don't turn I know who spoke it was Frypan.

"Did they?" I stare Gally down my chin raising defensively. "For three years we have co-existed with these things." I hear Elaine snort actually snort like a little piglet.

"You mean we have hid and they have killed us." She mutters Gally turns towards her and she looks straight back, no sign of regret for her words.

"Now you have killed one of them." He says taking a cupple steps toward them. Thomas avoids eye contact but Elaine doesn't. She just stairs coolly. "Who knows what that could mean for us." Gally continues. I'm tired of him saying the same thing over again.

"Well what do you suggest we do?" I speak up, everyone turns to me but I only look at Gally.

"They have to be punished." The room bursts into talking. Thomas opens his mouth to say something but Elaine leans over whispers something in his ear and he closes it again.

"Minho. You were there with them, what do you think?" I say I see Elaine raise her eyebrows and then lean back on a beam.

"I think in all the time we've been here. No one's ever killed a griever before. When I turned tail and ran. These two shanks stayed behind to help Alby. Look I don't know if they're brave or stupid. But whatever it is we need more of it. I say we make them runners." Once again the room breaks out into chatter. Someone starts chanting their names but stops quickly.

Runners?

"If you want to throw the newbies a parade that's fine! Go ahead! but if there's one thing I know about the maze it's that you do not-" his voice is downed out by a sound that is very familiar to me. A sound I have heard every month for three years. The box.

I look to Gally then to Elaine who has risen and is now standing next to me. Without a word we all start to go run out the door to the sound.
Gally Elaine and I get to the box first.

"Well shit" I hear Elaine breathe.
Gally signals me to open my side of the box so I do. Then I jump down into the darkness.

"Newt what do you see?" Asks someone from above

"It's... another girl." I look to Elaine who looks very similar to everyone else. Confused. She then moves jumping into the box beside me.

"Is she dead?" She questions kneeling down next to the girl.

"What's in her hand?" Asks Gally pointing to a small piece of paper in the girls hand. I reach over taking the paper and unfolding it.

"She's the last one... ever." I read out to everyone.

"What the hell does that mean?" I hear Elaine say I look up meeting her eyes.

The girl starts awake breathing heavily, we all flinch back at the sodden movement.

"Thomas..." is all she says then her eyes flutter closed and her breaths becoming slow and deep again. everyone looks at Thomas, he looks like a deer in headlights as my eyes drift back to Elaine I notice she isn't focused on them she starts moving the girls hair out of her face and checking for injuries.

"Still think I'm overreacting?" Asks Gally looking accusatorially at Thomas.

"Yeah a little." Elaine whispers still tending to the girl. I can't help but smile.
