THIS YEAR, NATE DECIDED that he didn't want his birthday to be a big deal. he had been throwing birthday parties for as long as he could remember, and will probably continue doing so, but on his 17th birthday he wanted to spend the day with his closest friends. his schoolmates understood his choice - it wasn't like they minded anyway, since they went to different parties everyday. one party less wouldn't affect them in any way.

sophia was in a hurry, trying out different lipstick shades. her usual make up consisted of no more than just mascara, but nate told her that there will be three more people this time, not just amalia, nate and her, like it had always been. and since first impressions are really important, sophia did her best to look nice.

she was relieved that she won't be there alone with mali and nate - ever since the two had gotten together, it had been awkward for sophia. she just felt like she was the third wheel, especially when they were kissing and she was just... being there. sophia was happy for them, as she was the one who watched the two fall in love with each other over the years. of course, she appreciated that they brought her with them everywhere so she wouldn't feel left out, but 90% of the time, she felt like it would have been better if she stayed home, making a poor excuse just so they could spend the time together as a couple. so, the thought of finally not being the third wheel and having other people to talk with relieved her.

but, on the other hand, she was a little freaked out. although she loved meeting new people, it scared her - so many 'what ifs' in her head, which after some time she begins to believe.

sophia loved the diversity among people. her dad kept telling her that if everyone on this planet would be the same, living wouldn't be fun, and she agreed with him. but sometimes people who are different as in different different, weird her out. so all she could do now was pray that nate's three friends aren't some creeps who ask concerning questions, but people who she can actually talk to.
