Tanjiro was waiting for Ami to come back from the claws of a butterfly look alike. They had both been, unfortunately, muzzled when the sun started to set. She tugged on it to at least loosen it a bit. It felt like it was digging into her skin.
"Hmm?" The door opened, a light illuminating her white skin and dark eyes. "Tanjiro?" Nezuko called out, to her now big 'sister'. Tanjiro turned her head to her sister and let out a hum. Nezuko walked in and hugged her sister.
"You know, when you weren't at home in the morning, I thought of the worst. And then we found your body in the snow on our way to Mount Sagiri...." Her crimson eyes darkened at the memory, while Tanjiro's softened.
She pressed her chin against Nezuko's forehead in the hug. "Mmhm." Nezuko looked about ready to cry.
"And there we find you, on that mountain. It must have been horrible to make people do that to each other, huh?" She started sobbing, hiccups escaping her mouth. Tanjiro nodded. She didn't want to remember what Rui had made her do. It was vile and twisted. She hated every second of it, the manslaughter, the torture, the pain she put other through.
It was horrifically brutal. Kill or be killed as they would call it. She saved who she could, even if it wasn't as many as she hoped.
She had missed the comfort her loved ones brought her. The relief, the affection. At least she had Nezuko and Takeo back. Tanjiro thought back on the past two years. That's what Rui was trying to accomplish, wasn't it? A family to call his.
Tanjiro honestly pitied the lower six. He was alone, that's why he created this family. Maybe if he didn't torture her so, he would have seen how kinda Tanjiro tried to be. At least her positive impact affected others.
Tanjiro rubbed circles on her younger sisters back, softly hiking a lullaby their mother used to sing. You could hardly make out the words, but it was calming to the younger girl. Tanjiro was like a mother, a calming, collective, nurturing person.
Her eyelids grew heavy, and the way Nezuko went limp from sleep comforted her wasn't helping. The knowledge that at least two of her siblings were safe put her at enough ease to rest. But she had to stay up so she could greet Ami when she got back.
Her hand eventually stopped moving on Nezuko's back, and her eyelids shut. She heard the door creaking open, and she shifted slightly due to the discomfort the light brought her.
She managed to crack one of her eyes open to see familiar black and purple hair picking Nezuko up, and Ami coming Tanjiro's way. She picked her up like she was nothing and set her on the bed. She wanted to ask if Nezuko could stay in the room, but Shinobu had already carried her out and Tanjiro was just to tired.
She curled up on the bed and let her eyelids close completely again. She felt a comforting hand rubbing her head, helping lull her off to sleep. She fell asleep in her daughters hold.
When Nezuko woke up she was back on one of those hospital beds. She knew it wasn't where she fell asleep, Shinobu probably carried her there. She might be small but she can carry a lot more than it seems.
She looked over to Zenitsu and Inosuke, the loud boys she had somehow made friends with. Inosuke was... he seemed inconsiderate at first, but she knew he cared about the two. And Zenitsu was flat out infatuated with her, but she knew he was a kind guy. It was just hard to see through that layer of jealousy.
She had sat up to get another glance at the two, before getting out of the bed. Her recovery uniform shifted as she smoothed it out. She looked through both doors in the room. She had forgotten which way to find her siblings. You could see the question marks around her head as she looked at both doors repeatedly.
"Miss Nezuko?" She jolted at the sudden voice. It was one of the little girls, Sumi, she believed. "Uhh, yeah?" She rubbed the back of her neck nervously. "Do you need help with something, Sumi?" Her red eyes looked down softly at the dark haired girl.
"I'm sorry for scaring you. Since you're awake, would you like to eat and get ready for the recovery training?" The little girl asked. Nezuko tilted her head to the side.
Recovery training? She believed Shinobu had said something about it previously, but she was so exhausted and mad that she forgot what she said. The only thoughts on her mind were to check on her siblings, get some rest, and beat that oversized chihuahua if she ever saw him again.
Mainly the last one. It pissed her off how he so easily cut Tanjiro's face up like that and slapped her with no remorse. Not to mention how he stabbed Takeo so many times. That was just unforgivable in her eyes, and completely unnecessary!
"Um, sure Sumi!" Nezuko gave the smaller give a head pat. She smiled up at her so bright it could be blinding. "Great! Follow me!" She grabbed Nezuko's head and led her out of the room.
"Do you wanna say good morning to that lady you busted last night first?" She asked. "It's on the way anyways!" Nezuko smiled at the little girl. "I'd love that, thank you."
Sumi led her down two different hallways, until they got to the familiar door. She slid it open only a crack, peering inside, before opening it fully. On the bed sat Tanjiro and Ami, both asleep and circled up beside each other. Nezuko brought her gaze to the box, which had the door fully opened.
Panic set in and she took a slow step inside. She walked to the bed to see Takeo snuggled between the two. She let out a breath of relief and slowly and carefully pat her little brothers head, careful not to walk any of them up.
She stared at her two siblings lovingly, moving a stray hair out of Tanjiro's face. She then looked over to Ami. She had so desperately tried to protect Tanjiro, and even tried to warn Nezuko about Rui reattaching his head. It would have saved her life it she chose to listen, and she wouldn't have been rescued by Giyuu.
"Thank you, for everything you've done for hi— her." She caught herself. She'd never get used to what happened, but at least she had her older brother back.
She tucked Ami's hair behind her ear and smiled, before following Sumi out of the room.
