Claire's POV
I had been out of the hospital wing for three weeks now and I hadn't heard from Malfoy, not since he left the day before I was discharged. Trying to pretend it didn't bother me had been the hardest part of all of this. Pretending I'm not in any pain, pretending I'm fine when I walk past Daphne even when she smiles smugly at me. But most of all, it had been hard to pretend I didn't care about Malfoy's lack of interest in me. It's as if a switch had turned the second we concluded our last conversation. Dare I say I missed him, even the eye rolls he gave me when I poked fun at him? People thought we hated each other, but we had a silent understanding. We keep our distance, but we don't disappear.
Headed to herbology I saw Malfoy up in a tree and stopped to look, remembering when he'd gotten me to climb a tree and I could only get to the first branch before I was stuck, not going up and definitely not going down. He had to bring me down on his broom. A smile bloomed on my face at the memory, soon turning into a frown when I realized how distant it was.
I looked around me and saw people still wearing magical badges. They changed to "Potter Stinks" as Harry passed by. Everyone was wearing them, they have been since he was chosen to be a champion. Harry brushed past me after talking to Cedric Diggory when Malfoy called his name.
"Why so tense Potter?" He called out, getting no reaction from Harry. "My father and I have a bet you see, I don't think you're going to last ten minutes in the second task." Malfoy jumped down from the tree and started walking towards Harry. "He disagrees, he thinks you won't last five."
Harry strides up to Malfoy and shoves him back. I drop my things and start walking over, knowing Malfoy won't take kindly to being touched. "I don't give a damn what your father thinks Malfoy. He's vile and Cruel, and you're pathetic." Harry spat. By the time I reached him, Draco started pulling out his wand, "I'll show you pathetic." He said when suddenly he was gone, just a pile of clothes there. But he wasn't. I looked down and he had turned into a ferret. A white ferret. I ran to pick him up, Professor Moody walked over and shook him up and down, calling him all sorts of names.
"Moody! Put him down! Are you insane? You can't do that!" I tried my best to reason with him to no avail. Professor McGonagall showed up and started scolding him. He flicked his wand and Malfoy the Ferret was in my shirt. I screamed but held it in place, Crabbe and Goyle laughing hysterically.
When Moody was distracted by McGonagalls scolding I ran as fast as I could, holding the ferret in my shirt. Why do I keep getting myself into these situations?
I went into the Slytherin common room only to see it packed with students who had a free period. I can't turn him back here! Everyone will see. I had to think fast and ran to the boys' room, realizing he'd be blasted out of mine the second he changed back.
Once I'd opened the door and shut it behind me, I unbuttoned my shirt all the way, not only exposing the ferret sitting in a pouch-like shape by my hip but also my nude bralette adorned with black lace. "Don't worry little Malfoy, I'll have you back in a jiffy," I spoke gently to the ferret in my shirt. I tugged him off of where he was clinging to my skin, thank goodness it didn't have sharp nails, and set him down on the floor.
"I'm not sure if your clothes spawn back onto you so I am going to close my eyes after I cast the spell," I told the little animal and pointed my wand at it, I waved my wand and before I could see if he had turned back I closed my eyes. I heard some rustling and asked "You alright there?" keeping my eyes closed. I felt his presence before I heard him, his body heat as he got close to me. Feeling the front of his knees brush my thighs.
"You can open up now." He said, his voice a deep whisper.
I looked up to see him, my lips parting once I realized he hadn't put on a shirt. Just a pair of grey Slytherin track pants. He looked down at me, leaning down half a millimeter, enough for my chest to brush his abdomen. His eyes were dark, his gaze as heavy as his breaths. I couldn't decipher the look on his face when he broke me out of my trance with four harsh words. "Button. Up. Your. Shirt." He said through clenched teeth.
