"go out and explore the town!"
i squeeze my eyes shut, wanting to ignore my mothers call.
just a couple hours ago i was home, in the town i grew up in as a kid. and now here i am. far away from everything i loved and knew.
"i heard there's a skatepark near by!" my mom shouted once more, though this statement pulled me out of my trance. maybe doing something i like in this stupid town will cheer me up. i got dressed and grabbed my skateboarding. skating was one of the fews things that brought my comfort, it was also one of the few things i was actually good at. i headed downstairs and out the door.
seattle washington. i won't lie, it's pretty beautiful. the sun shone against the clouds and through the amber sky. i walked along the street, passing many houses where children played in their backyards. they seem so happy here, maybe i can be too.
in the distance i spotted the skate park. it wasn't too full, i could see about 5 people there. i rode my board to the entrance of the park, stopping to scan the area. okay, this was definitely cooler than the park back at home. i put on my headphones, letting the music consume me as i mindlessly skated around the park, trying out the different types of ramps and bowls.
after a bit i decide to take a break. i sat on a nearby bench to catch my break. suddenly, i feel i finger tap my shoulder. i looked up. a muffled voice came from the person who had tapped me. the girl spoke with a wide grin on her face. i took my headphones off.
"sorry? i didn't hear you." i said sheepishly.
"i said, your moves are awesome!" the black haired girl exclaimed.
i blushed from embarrassment, i hadn't noticed that someone was watching me. "thank you." i replied.
"i've never seen you around here, what's your name?"
"oh my name is y/n. i just moved here, like a couple hours ago actually." i laughed.
"oh that's cool! my name is lyla," the girl said confidently. something about her demeanor made me feel comfortable. "since you're new here i assume you have no friends? so i will gladly be your first." she started walking off, waving for me to join her.
"well it's nice to meet you lyla," i picked up and my board and followed closely behind "so, how long have you lived in seattle?" i asked her, curious about the girl.
"i grew up here. born and raised," she answered, "honestly i love it here. people are great and it's really pretty." i nodded silently, following her onto the streets of the town. "do you live close?" she posed the question to me
"yea! i live a couple streets down."
"oh! you live near my best friend sean! i totally have to introduce you to him," i interested peeked at the mention of this person, sean. lyla though for a moment before speaking again. "since you live in nearby, are you going to be attending peacock high?"
"yeah i am. my first day is on monday." i spoke with a slight annoyance in my voice, not wanting to start school so soon.
lyla practically jumped when she heard me say that. "i go there!" she giggled "y/n we're going to be best friends." i laughed as well, glad that i had made my first friend without much struggle.
we walked around town, talking more. i told her about my life back in my hometown and how i already missed it while she talked to me about how amazing seattle is. even thought i was pretty sure she was just turing to reassure me, it managed to make me feel less anxious.
"it's getting late, i should probably head home." i said, a sad expression planted on my face.
"okay well here-" lyla pulled out her phone and handed it to me "put your number and it so we can text over the weekend."
i put my number in her phone and waved her goodbye
that night i laid in my bed, thinking about the day i had. i hope seattle was meant for me.
