As usual, Hawks lets his alarm ring twice before he sends a feather over to shut it down.
This time, the alarm doesn't stop after the second ring.
He groans as the phone keeps vibrating on the bedside table with no signs of stopping, the shrill noise drilling into his skull. Hawks shifts towards the sound slowly as his mind lags, his body reflexively moving on its own. A hand slams against the wooden surface and the phone bounces off with a crash, the noise finally disappearing.
That'll do for now.
Gingerly, he rubs the sleep off his eyes as he gets up, running his fingers through messy bed hair. He makes his way over to the closet with a yawn, automatically reaching over for his hero costume. Hawks's hand freezes as his fingertips graze the fur lining, a vicious reminder of the life he had just days before. He pulls his hand away slowly as the softness of the fur lingers, the once comforting sensation now feeling like a stab in the heart.
Something twists in his stomach, but he shoves the bitterness down. There was no time for him to focus on unnecessary emotions. His handler would be more than displeased if he showed up in such a sorry state.
Hawks still needed to see the HPSC for his debrief of his latest mission.
After minutes of searching, he finally settles with some grey sweatpants and a plain white t-shirt, custom made with two slits at the back, just like all of his other clothes. The airflow around his back feels too cold as it grazes against his bare skin, making Hawks's scars tingle. He'll have to start getting regular clothes now that he doesn't have to worry about his wings getting in the way.
Walking towards the kitchen, Hawks glances over at the couch, hoping that last night was just a fever dream.
Turquoise eyes greet him as a shit-eating grin appears on Dabi's face at the sight of the hero.
"What's for breakfast birdie?" The villain asks, still sprawled out on the couch with a cigarette between his fingers.
Hawks turns away as he heads towards the coffee machine, bending down to grab a cup. He narrows his eyes at the sight of the villain lounging on the couch, trying to keep the anger from seeping into his voice. "I don't think you've understood our arrangement here Dabi. I'm not here to babysit you."
Dabi raises an eyebrow as he discards the bud on the hero's table. "That's not how you should treat a guest, Keigo. Did your mother never teach you any manners?"
The villain's comment makes Hawks's stomach churn again, the awful feeling coming back to leech onto the last slithers of his happiness.
He manages to mask the anger with a casual shrug as he stands up, setting the cup on the marble countertop. "Never had one, so I wouldn't know. Maybe you could give me some tips since you turned out so well" Hawks's eyes flicker up at the last comment, waiting to see if he can get a reaction out of the fire user.
For a moment, something dark settles in Dabi's eyes. "Low blow Hawks." The temperature around them rises as the villain meets the blonde's gaze, chuckling as Hawks stiffens. "Aren't you scared that I might just-" Sparks fly up into the air as Dabi ignites a tiny blue flame, letting it dance on his fingertips. "-light this place up?"
Hawks mimics Dabi's smile as he turns around to pop a capsule into the machine. "That's not how you should treat your saviour, Dabi. You should know that I'm letting you stay here out of the kindness of my heart."
Kindness.
Hawks doesn't know how much of that he's got left.
The coffee machine splutters to life, filling the room with a rich scent of roasted beans.
