Chapter 2: An unexpected dancer

16 semptember 1943, Thorpe Abbots, Officer's club

Marlene's throat burned, as she downed her second whiskey of the night in one go. But the alcohl still tasted sweeter than the downright depressing conversation, in her opinion, that just took place.

So much for a light-hearted evening!

With Dye's return, at first, the base seemed to return to the happiness and vibrance of the first days, when everyone thought that they were unstoppable and capable of conquer the world. People were cheering. Billy and Sammy run to Dye's fortress, mindful of the pilot's promise to take them flying, if he made it back. Everything was fine.

So all the base's crew took on the road to the Officer's club, to celebrate the 25 missions.

Lena, even though her shyness, really loved the parties that took place after the missions.

At first it wasn't like this, mainly because she didn't know very well the airmen, apart from John and Buck, so her overthinking took the best of her. But then, after a lot of time and a lot of reassuring on her brother's part, she was now a regular appearance at the club.

In fact, it was not rare to see the blonde at most parties, after the missions, dancing mostly with Cros and Bubbles, as they always managed to make her feel at ease.

And Lena had fun, she felt alive.
