Waspaw turned around and saw three pairs of eyes staring at him. Blacktail was blazing with anger, Foxpaw was filled with delight, and Snowfeather was disappointed. But then she saw the giant black crow he was carrying and her expression changed to utter shock, while Foxpaw's was extremely unhappy.
"I needed to catch this crow," Wasppaw stammered awkwardly.
"I can see that clearly. Well, Wasppaw, great job," Snowfeather praised. Even Blacktail gave a grunt of praise and surprise. "Nice job," Blacktail managed.
The walk back to camp was awkward. Foxpaw's mood had plummeted and she was casting Wasppaw dirty and injured looks."Let her go whine somewhere else by herself," Wasppaw thought. The camp's entrance was just ahead. Wasppaw ran ahead and got praised by Sunclaw who was guarding the entrance. "Nice job," he purred.
"Good job, Wasppaw. Once again you'll make a good hunter," Amberstar meowed, who had saw Wasppaw's catch . Wasppaw nodded and dropped the crow on the fresh-kill pile, but inside he was dancing with joy. "Amberstar called me a good hunter,"
"Sandfeather, Badgerfang, and Appleleap aren't back yet. Foxpaw and Wasppaw, you two go work on your battle moves," Needletail ordered.
Wasppaw and Foxpaw hurried to the Mossy Hollow not wanting to anger Needletail. "This is bad, really bad," Wasppaw judged by the cheerful looks Foxpaw was giving him.
Foxpaw began circling him, her claws working in the grass. "You move," she sneered. "You obviously need some work."
"Why thank you so much, Foxpaw," Wasppaw hissed under his breath. But he leaped at her anyway, his paws outstretched half-heartedly. Foxpaw easily slipped out of the way and hooked his front paws out from underneath him, sending him sprawling in the dirt. As Wasppaw fell, Foxpaw smiled winningly. "I think maybe you need some more preparation for fighting me. Why don't you go back to the nursery for a while, Waspkit?" she sneered.
At this, Wasppaw's ears flattened to his skull and stood up, his tail flicking. "I'll show you preparation," he snarled. He lunged at Foxpaw again and she dodged, preparing to trip him, but this time he was ready. As she tried to swipe at his legs, he nimbly hopped out of the way so that she only scraped up leaves, and then bowled her over and raked her underbelly with his claws unsheathed, his mind foggy in a cloud of rage. He didn't notice the blood on Foxpaw's pelt until he calmed down and accidentally mistook her for Redwing, a red she-cat, and heard her yowls of pain.
Suddenly, many pairs of paws came pounding through the undergrowth. Wasppaw heard faint yowls of horror and reckoned that the other warriors that were charging towards them smelled blood. Then the panic suddenly hit him. Foxpaw was covered in blood. What would the other warriors think of him?
Then the warriors burst into the clearing. Wasppaw's heart sank as he realized that one of them was Snowfeather, his mentor's littermate, and the one who had supported him.
"What happened?" Amberstar demanded. Wasppaw heard Snowfeather gasping. "What happened?" Amberstar hissed. "Or, who did it," Blacktail hissed. "Does it matter right now? Get her to the medicine cat's den!" Flamewing demanded. Amberstar nodded and allowed Flamewing to take Foxpaw away. "Wasppaw, is it okay if I see you in my den for him to explain to me?" Amberstar asked softly, clearly trying to calm him down. "What will she say when she learns that I hurted Foxpaw?"
The shade of Amberstar's den caused Wasppaw to shake. "Make yourself at home," Amberstar meowed. Wasppaw gulped, "okay," "Now, what really happened in the Mossy hollow?" Amberstar meowed in a serious voice. "Should I tell her the truth, or should I save my own tail? StarClan help!" Wasppaw thought. "It all happened so fast that I couldn't tell," Wasppaw lied. Amberstar nodded thoughtfully, eyeing Wasppaw hoping that that wasn't the answer he would give. "Well, go take a break. Think about it. Tell me anything you remember. "Thank StarClan," Wasppaw thought, letting out a sigh of relief. He turned and left the den.
The clearing was oddly quiet as Wasppaw walked out of the leader's den. Feathernose rushed to meet him. "Are you okay? I heard something happened at Mossy Hollow,""I'm fine," Wasppaw replied. "It's Foxpaw that's not," he muttered under his breath.
Wasppaw ducked away from Feathernose's gaze and headed towards the medicine den where he knew Foxpaw would be laying in a mossy bed being fawned over by the medicine cat. Sure enough, there she was. As Wasppaw came in, Foxpaw hissed in rage. "How in the whole StarClan can you come in here when you hurt me?" Foxpaw answered her own question. "Oh right, to tell me that you're sorry," she meowed in a mocking tone. As Wasppaw opened his mouth to reply, Autumnblaze stepped into the den with a scowl. "Wasppaw, get out of my den," she snapped. "Foxpaw needs treatment and you're not going to interfere with the healing process!" She bushed out her fur and stood beside Foxpaw's nest.
Wasppaw backed away hurriedly and turned tail and ran towards the prey pile. He noticed that the prey pile was fairly full with the crow that he caught. "Maybe it wouldn't be that bad after all," he thought. As he turned around he saw Amberstar! She picked up his crow and started to eat it. Wasppaw was warm with happiness.
He started to walk towards the apprentice den wanting some rest. There, he saw Onepaw sharing a vole with Dewpaw whispering to each other. When he walked up to them they shot him a warning glare. "Don't get any closer murder!" "Foxpaw told them, didn't she? Oh, well, there goes my friends," Wasppaw thought, sighing as he dragged his paws behind him to sit somewhere else. When he went to join Feathernose he could hear Foxpaw snort, "Well someone only has elders to sit with. I wonder where his friends are?" Then Onepaw and Dewpaw laughed with her. "Well this night is going to be long," Wasppaw thought as the moon rose slowly, turning the sky that was just lit by the sun a navy blue and cold color who's only light came from the almost full moon.
