September 2014

It was Sunday afternoon; Theo was sitting on the couch in their new house in California. They'd just moved to California at the start of the year, and he was still having a hard time adjusting to the fact that he won't see Penny and Abigail every day like he had most of his life but his Mama explained that she needed to be here for her job and that they'll take so many trips to see Penny and Abigail in Nashville that he won't have a chance to miss them.

"3rd and 2...two timeouts... they go underneath... this is Kelce who was so terrific last week... to the pylon and that is a Kansas City touchdown! This kid is quickly emerging on the scene. Travis Kelce"

The announcer spoke as a tiny picture of Travis Kelce moved on the TV in front of him, sprinting through a football field and scoring against the Miami Dolphins. Theo was a bit sad because he actually liked the Miami Dolphins even though he has never actually heard of them before this game that he put on an hour ago. He just thought Dolphins were neat. But he was happy for his Dad. Travis Kelce was his Dad, and his Dad just scored a touchdown.

"MAMA! DAD SCORED!" Theo exclaimed very loudly and Taylor who was in the kitchen making cookies for after dinner smiled at Theo's excitement.

It was also bittersweet for her to hear Theo's excitement and hear about Travis' first career touchdown over the TV instead of being there and witnessing it live but she has learned to deal with her feelings for Travis, she'd learned to keep those feelings from interfering with Theo getting to know Travis' side of the family, except he hasn't gotten to know Travis because Travis hasn't called and hasn't asked and hasn't tried to, a voice whispered in the back of her mind. She'll never forget getting the call from Donna last summer after she told her mother it's ok to give Donna her number after Andrea realized exactly who fathered Theo. It's been hard, explaining who exactly Donna, Ed, and Jason are to Theo, but he was dealing with it wonderfully. The one part that was left unspoken between everyone was the absence of Travis, Taylor hasn't asked why he wasn't there the first time the Kelces met Theo and the Kelces didn't bring him up. After the left Theo asked why his Dad wasn't with them and she made up and excuse about him being busy training for football. She didn't have to heart to explain to her son that his dad might not want to meet him or get to know him.

She walked into the living room just as the broadcast showed the reply for his touchdown and panned to him on the sideline smiling and laughing with a teammate as he explained something on the field. And my god he looked as handsome as ever. She wished she could hate him.

"That's great ducky, I'm sure he's happy about it" she said as she sat down next to him and watched the rest of the game.

As the game ended with the Chiefs winning Theo turned to face her, she was on the phone texting Tom canceling their plans for tomorrow. She needed to be in the studio to finish up the last few details related to the album and honestly she's been trying to find a way to break up with him or have him break up with her for about a month now. She'd liked him when they first met a few months ago, he was sweet and funny and charming, but it quickly fizzled out and she doesn't know how to end it now. He was just supposed to be rebound after the shitshow that was her relationship with Matty, but it lasted longer than it should have and now she doesn't know how to end it.

"Mommy?" Theo said hesitantly

"Yeah baby?" She put down her phone to look at him. He was biting his lips and he looked nervous.
