"Perhaps, The moon is just a frozen tear."

〰️ DECEMBER THIRTEENTH 〰️

Emerie Cynthia Rainn

Tonight is unusually quiet, especially for a Monday night. There seems to be a different atmosphere in the air compared to other nights.

Out of all the weekdays, Monday has become my favorite. It used to be Sundays, but they have become challenging for me.

I briefly close my eyes before opening them again.

I instinctively place my hand against my throat and gently rub it, as I try to calm my breathing.

The sound of footsteps echoes in my ears unintentionally.

"Shut up... Shut up..." I mutter repeatedly as I continue to walk. The building comes into view shortly after my brief moment of panic.

The music from the outside store speakers reach my ears; As I open the door, a wave of warm air hits my face once again.

However, this time, the sight that greets me is unsettling. The Christmas tree has been knocked over, the snowman-shaped jar lies shattered on the floor, and the lights hanging around the room have been torn down.

I know; I no longer enjoy Christmas, but who would do such a thing? And why?

It is then that I hear the sound of a woman yelling from his office..

The woman's voice is filled with anger as she expresses her frustration, "You left me with no choice! You're always in this damn office, from nine in the morning until ten at night. The building doesn't even stay open past seven, yet you're still here. What else was I supposed to think while you're always with other women?" Her tone reveals her deep emotion.

I feel guilty for his late nights at the office. I had asked him if I could come later in the day; I have a preference for nights.

He agreed of course but I didn't know it would come at the cost of his marriage.

He tries to reason with her, "I understand that you're upset, I really do. But this is my job, my passion. I love helping others, and if I have to stay later than usual to ensure someone is okay, then I will. You knew this before you signed the marriage certificate, so I don't understand why it's bothering you now." I hear her groan in frustration, followed by a glass being thrown out of the door, shattering against the wall right in front of me.

I freeze in fear, unable to move.

The woman continues to express her grievances, "Yes, I understand that. But when I don't get to see my husband in the morning when I wake up or at night when I go to sleep, it becomes a problem. I'm sorry for what I did, but it was because I became desperate for your attention. I missed you."

He responds with shock, "And you think cheating on me was the answer? You could have talked to me; to tell me what I needed to do to fix our relationship. But, Instead, you went out of your way to find another man and sleep with him."

My eyes widen in disbelief. She cheated on him?

That's the reason behind their impending divorce?

The tension in the room grows as both parties continue to argue. She defends her actions, "Don't phrase it like that! I needed attention, and you weren't giving it to me. I couldn't come talk to you because you were always too busy-"
