"I can't believe this is the standard of the Wizarding World! I can't believe this is what I have to deal with!"

To say Tom was furious would be an understatement.

Tom wasn't furious. Tom was in disbelief, disappointed, angry, irritated and felt ready to destroy something — or maybe, destroy someone . The one that sent him that letter could be a good start.

Refusing Tom's presence at the Wizergamont just because of his blood status . And mentioning a Law as reason to that refusal, as if it was a good reason to refuse someone like Tom Riddle .

"I don't know why you're so surprised, Tom," Harry told him, lying on Tom's bed in the Slytherin dormitory. Harry was the only Gryffindor who was allowed access to the Slytherin Common Room, under Tom's direction, and the only person in the world who was allowed such behaviour in Tom's presence. Others had tried to emulate him. It hadn't ended well for any of them. "You said so yourself that it feels like we're stuck in the Middle Ages here. Such a law is not that far behind torches and scrolls, if you think about that."

Tom gritted his teeth. Thinking that Muggles were ahead in some matters irritated the boy deeply. He didn't want to give them any credit.

Yet Harry was making everything so difficult. If a Mudblood like Tom, raised as a Pureblood by the best families in the Wizarding World, thought that Muggles were better in some ways than Wizards... Tom was even more determined to change things than he was the first time he stepped into this new world and reality.

"You stopped me from releasing the Basilisk for these people ." Tom couldn't help but growl. "I wouldn't have this kind of problem right now."

Harry rolled his eyes. From his position, lying as he was, devoid of any Pureblood decorum that people like the Malfoys wore like armour on a daily basis, he looked rather ridiculous yet sweet.

Tom sometimes was surprised by his ability of being a Pureblood in the proper circles, and then leaving all his masks behind when it was just him and Tom. As if he could trust Tom.

"You know that would have been a bad idea, Tom. You wouldn't have this kind of problem, maybe, but Hogwarts would have closed for safety reasons and I don't know what the Aurors would have done to find the culprit." Harry sighed. "And I can't believe I have to remind you."

"Good, okay." Tom growled, waving the letter that had been sent to him. "But explain to me what's the point of having to be part of a Noble and Ancient family in Magical England to be able to join the Government!"

"We have made some progress from that point of view," Harry murmured absentmindedly. "Before it was only for actual family members . Now, after the intervention in the war against Grindelwald by people who did not belong to them, they have decided to expand it and insert the Marriage Law."

" Progress ?" Tom growled, becoming even more agitated. "You call progress going back to the Middle Ages? The Muggles abolished those laws centuries ago !"

"Centuries ago?" Harry wrinkled his nose in confusion. "I can't believe Muggle Studies doesn't talk about it, but then again, it's probably done on purpose. Our government won't want to show that Muggles can be better than us at anything."
