Chapter 9: Filo Pastries

February of 2016....

Mrs. Jeon's irritation level reached its peak as her usual cooking routine was getting hampered by the sudden tantrum pulled by her youngest child. It's been two hours since Jungkook has kept the kitchen occupied. His new aspiration was making filo pastry!

The kind mother promised to be supportive towards her children, hence she hesitated to ask him otherwise. She watched the boy working so passionately while kneading a dough of flour, mixed with water and oil. The artistry in the actions were making her feel a tinge of pride inside but she decided to be modest with her opinion.

Jungkook rolled out thin sheets of the dough and stacked them adding mixture of butter and dried herbs in between them. As those were done, he put the trays inside the refrigerator and asked his mother to take over the kitchen.

"So, all these for a friend's party?" She asked folding her arms against the chest.
"It's uh- a bir- birthday party, mom. And it's important."

His brief answer and slight stammering registered in the woman's head, this wasn't about Jimin or Taehyung. It was definitely someone way more special. She settled with a nod and carried on with her work as Jungkook left the kitchen.

He went inside the shared bedroom and plopped on his brother's bed, hugging him from the side. Eun-woo nudged on his arms to let him go as he was busy wrapping a box.

"I'm busy, Kookie."
"Woooooo! I love you!"

The pair of scissors in Eun-woo's hands was thrown out of the bed in a projectile motion out of shock. He couldn't believe what his brother just told him! Then again, he recalls few other days when Jungkook used this very same statement.

"What do you want?" Eun-woo asked while picking the scissors up and resuming the gift wrapping process.
"Oh come on! Can't I just say how much I love my studious, sincere, sweet and strict brother?"

Eun-woo rolled his eyes without looking at the peachy face of his brother. "I will always be the annoying elder brother to you who lectures you at everything, Kookie. So shut it out and tell me what you want this time."

Jungkook gave up and sighed making his usual done face and shifted to his own bed that was just beside his brother's.
"I might stay a bit late at the party today, Woo. I want you to cover for me at home. Please!"
He made sure to form the puppy eyes While fiddling the fingers to melt his twin's heart.

"I'm going to a party too, Kookie. I told you already."
"I know but I'm sure you are going to be back in time like a good boy."

A nasty frown was displayed by the elder to which Jungkook giggled out. "You are a good boy, Woo. Please help me!"
"You brat! Fine, but where exactly are you going?"
"It's Hoseok hyung's birthday party."

There was a surprise and confusion visible in Eun-woo's eyes that was overlooked by Jungkook. He swallowed some unknown anxiety before asking, "Jung Hoseok? Why would he invite you?"

Jungkook didn't like the way the question was framed. He felt a little embarrassed as if getting an invitation to Hoseok's party was some kind of strange occurrence to Eun-woo.
"Yes, Hoseok hyung as in the dance club president. I'm friends with him after Jimin introduced us." He responded with a mild shrug of confidence but the elder enquired further, "You wasting your Saturday morning just to make filo pastries for his birthday party?"

A little pause was taken as the sentence sounded too lame to Jungkook. He was making the savoury pastries along which he planned to use minced chicken, tofu and vegetables as stuffing. Hoseok's birthday was last Thursday but due to school, his parents allowed him to host the party on Saturday. Due to two unit tests on same day, Jungkook missed to prepare something as a birthday gift for his crush, hence he decided to prepare low calorific filo pastries as a present.
