The story is centered around Shoko Komi, a beautiful high school girl who suffers from extreme social anxiety, and struggles to communicate with others. With the help of her classmates Dan Lee and Hitohito Tadano, they embark on a mission to make 100 friends and improve Komi's communication skills.

Background: Dan moved from the United States to live with his grandparents, who were living at Itan for work, after his parents died. His Japanese is a little rusty, so he always has to write what he's trying to say in English, and Komi has to write English along with her Japanese to communicate with him.
