"Are you sure you don't want to come out with us for dinner tonight sweetie?" My mom asked me as she leaned on my door frame.

Shaking my head, "nah mom I can't, I have to finish studying for this upcoming test in a few days." I motioned at the books on my desks as she peaked over with a head nod.

As she sighed, she walked over to me and gave me a kiss on the forehead. "Alright sweetie, I'll make sure to save you a to-go plate."

"Oh you're the best." I hugged her as she accepted the embraced. "And you bet not forget it." She pinched my arm playfully with a chuckle.

My dad yelled for her to hurry up as she smacked her lips. "Don't be rushing me Jabari! I'm coming!" We said our I Love You's as she exited out of my room.

I turned back to my history notes, as I blocked out the noise from their playful banter that was heard throughout the halls.

Reading over the Civil Rights Act passage, I jotted down some more notes with ten minutes left to spare on the clock. I made sure to grab my highlighter to highlight which key note was the most important to memorize.

Pulling out my flashcards to look over what I had so far, my phone started to ring. Getting up from my desk to take my phone out of the charger I started to chuckle on who it was.

Answering the call, I can already hear him cussing someone out about his food.

"Wassup Kenji."

"Why yo ass had to take forever to answer my call. You could've been my last life line and you would've left me for dead. Ion like that!!" He fussed at me.

Here he go with the dramatics. I shook my head once more. "Don't be shaking yo head at me! I'm hurt!" He started fake sniffing while I busted out laughing.

"I forgot we on FaceTime my fault." I cleared my throat as I took a seat back on my desk.

"But anyways, why you calling my pipe at this type of night, don't you got track practice tomorrow?" I asked him.

Kenji is my cousin from my father's side. Our father's grew up in the hard cold nights of South Side Crenshaw.

Growing up, they had to make the best out of their living situation at a young age so they always turned to each other for any support needed and that created a brotherhood between the two.

Then the brotherhood expanded when Kenji and I was born. Since I came out first, my father wanted me to continue the tradition of brotherhood with Kenji and at first I was against it because he was such a pain in my ass.
