Chapter 6

We stood there for a while just looking at each other until the silence was broken by Lani asking me to hold her bottle for her. "You guys ready" Avery asked holding up the ball. Lani and Brad nodded in agreement and Avery dropped the ball. The match was going to end if one of them reached 30 points.
Avery walked towards me and we stood next to each other watching our siblings play.

"You're sisters really good" Avery said breaking the silence between us. Lani already had 13 points. Brad wasn't that far with with 10, "your brothers not that bad" "yeah he isn't, but I have a feeling you're sister's gonna win this one and to be honest I won't be surprised if she does" she said the last part slightly whispering. I chuckled and she smiled when I did. "So, Cape Town?" "Yeah" I said smiling "how was it?" "It was so cool, the people there are really amazing and welcoming too". "That's cool, what other countries have you been too" Avery asked "alot" I said chuckling "we've been to Australia, Mauritius, Spain,Tanzania, Kenya, Canada, South Africa and I stayed with my grandma for a while in Florida before going back to my parents in Hawaii again when I was 4 for Lani's birth." I said smiling "Wow that is alot of countries" she said chuckling, "yeah I know" "wait Lani was born in Hawaii" she said surprised "yeah" I said chuckling "that's why her name is Leilani" "Wow, that's so crazy" I smiled "So, how long are you guys going to be in Cali" "Five years, thankfully no more moving" I said letting out a thankful sigh. "Is it not cool moving around" she asked, she probably noticed my sigh. "Yeah it's cool and all but sometimes it's nice just to stay in one place." She nodded and slightly smiled.

Her eyes seemed to sparkle whenever she did. I noticed it a bit before but I wasn't sure if I was seeing things mainly because she had her hair down most of the time and it kind of covered her eyes when it was, but now I was sure and it was nice to see.

I cleared my throat and looked away so it wouldn't seem as though I was staring, "So have you always been here?" "Yeah" "That's cool" "Yeah but not as cool as seeing most of the world" I chuckled, feeling her eyes on me when I did, I looked up at her but she turned her face away. To be honest being so close to her I could see her features clearly. Her eyes seemed deep, like there was alot to know behind them. Her skin, tanned although naturally a slight shade of brown in color,told me she spent alot of time outside. She had a build to her, which I noticed whenever she crossed her arms. She was also slightly taller than me. Her hair, dark brown in color, seemed kind of straight but was definitely more curly. Her voice was naturally low and slightly husky too.

My thoughts were interrupted by Lani shooting and making the basket which scored her a point. The game went by fast and indeed Lani ended up winning. "It was cool playing with you, sorry for doubting you" Brad said holding out his hand, "no problem I had fun kicking your butt" she said shaking his hand with a cheeky smile. He laughed "maybe we could do this again, if it's cool with you". Lani looked up at me for permission and I nodded "sure why not, next Friday same time?" "Sure". They smiled at each other and walked together to get their thing's.

I turned to Avery, "it was nice seeing you" "same here" she said smiling. They ran up to us, Avery put her hand on Brads shoulder "Do you wanna get some dinner" "Can we get Chick-fil-A?" he asked excitedly "Sure". He got all excited before turning to us "do you guys wanna come with us?" "Oh we wouldn't want to intrude" I said shaking my head "No we don't mind, think of it as a reward for the winner " she said smiling at Lani. Lani looked up at me, I gave in and said yes. I texted mom about it and she said it was cool, so we made our way to Chick-fil-A and had dinner.

"Thanks again for dinner" I said to Avery as we were leaving "no problem" she said smiling at me. A car pulled up and Brad ran up to it "bye Lani bye Malaika" he said waving. "Bye" Lani said waving and I smiled. Avery was about to leave too when she turned around "hey do you mind if I get your number?" "sure no problem" "cool, I'll text you when I get home" she said while walking to her mom's car and got in it. Avery opened the window and waved, . Lani and I waved back and smiled, soon after dad came to pick us up and we went back home and I was so tired and went up to my room.

I closed the door behind me and plopped onto my bed and laid there for a few minutes almost falling asleep when I heard a notification from my phone. It was Avery:

A: Hey, it's Avery from school

M: Hey

A: how are u

M: I'm good, tired though 😢

A: me too lol 💀

M: so wyd

A: nm, just chilling wbu

M: in bed

A: cool
A: so what do u think of school so far?

M: it's really cool, everyone so far has been really nice. Especially Hailey .

A: that's good, yh Hailey is very friendly with people especially new ones.
A: have you made any friends yet?

M: Natalie Kim in our homeroom

A: oh she's really cool

M: yeah ◉⁠‿⁠◉
M: btw is there anything I need to know about the school

A: not really, maybe there is I just don't know
A: I'm usually laid back tbh and kind of keep to Hailey and Kat

M: are they ur best friends??

A: yeah, I met Kat in kindergarten and Hailey in middle school when she moved here

M: that's cool

A: do you have any best friends

M: I had a best friend, Maddy when I was in Hawaii, but we kinda lost touch over the years.

A: that's sad

M: yeah :(

A: well I hope you like it here

M: as long as I'm near the beach, I'm happy

A: do u like the beach??

M: very much yes 😆

A: that's cool, I surf alot especially on Sundays with some friends.
A: u should come some time

M: I'll keep that in mind😉, thanks for the invitation

A: yes!! I have two, Mario and Sally.

A: do u have any pets?

M: I had a puppy, Milo in Cape Town but we had to leave him. •́⁠ ⁠ ⁠‿⁠ ⁠,⁠•̀

A: oh I'm sorry

M: it's cool, my parents said if things stay good then we could get another puppy 😆

A: that's cool, I hope u do 😉

Avery and I talked until 2 am and the conversation was really nice. We had alot in common. We both liked music especially The Internet and Tyler the creator. We love animals even though I'm more of a dog person and the beach. We love watching movies, especially old ones. I learnt that she also plays volleyball for the school and she invited me to her practice on Thursday. She was really fun and nice to talk to. At first I thought she was shy and soft spoken, but she was really energetic and friendly I could see why she was friends with Hailey. I sadly fell asleep at 2 am, the previous days activities and food I had earlier with the ice cream I had after that finally caught up to me and I just passed out I guess.
