There were five of him. Five men in the same blue suite carrying the same bag sitting on five separate planes. This was Kim's plan and it came together so quickly that Pete was already on a plane before sunset on on his failed wedding day. All he took from the city he spent the last twelve years of his life in was the cash transfer receipt for the twenty million American dollars Kim sent to a new hidden account only Pete could access and the five passports Kim had supplied to him. Only one was real and four other men now carried copies of that real one to destinations even farther away than Pete was traveling.
Khun had done as he promised and kept Vegas away from Pete and his unborn children. Pete watched from the darkness as the guards refused to allow Vegas through the main family compound gates. Pete watched as they were forced to restrain Vegas and finally Khun himself had to sedate him just to stop him from breaking through to find Pete.
It hurt seeing Vegas in pain and sobbing begging for him, but not as much as hurt seeing him balls deep fucking someone else. Pete worried Vegas would always be his weakness. He never thought he could hate someone and love them at the same time and even if the wound to his heart is fresh he know it will never heal properly. Something is broken in him now. As much as Pete wanted to comfort Vegas he almost needed to see his pain as well. Pete needed Vegas to suffer for the loss of him and their life together like medicine for Pete's broken heart and proof to his wounded soul that he had loved Pete as much as Pete loved him. He would rather his last memory of Vegas be one in which he is sobbing Pete's name and begging to see him than the one of him cheating with another man that had been playing on repeat in Pete's head.
He don't know where the other "Petes" were sent he am sure they were paid well to live as him until Vegas found them one by one. They were after all just a distraction. It was never the plan to fool him long only to buy Pete some time to escape the city. His first flight with his real passport was to Korea but there would be four more each to another country using a different name. Fly into the city check into a hotel fly out the next day. This was his routine for a week. Pete was grateful for his last flight to finally land. From there a driver took him to Kim's hidden safehouse. Japan was beautiful, but Pete wasn't used to the coldness of winter in a small town. He was given a coat by the driver. Kim had paid him well to ferry Pete comfortably from Tokyo to his secluded new home.
Pete was greeted at the door by an old round smiling woman who reminded me of my grandma. He missed his grandmother so much. She passed away a year after Pete moved in with Vegas. She had been his champion always telling everyone what a good man her grandson had found. Pete missed her but he was glad she will never know how Vegas broke his heart. The old woman introduced herself as the housekeeper Ana. She was married to Kenji the driver Kim had sent for him and they lived in the house in a room near the kitchen. There was something comforting in knowing the house wasn't as empty as Pete thought it would be.
The house was wood and cobblestone. It was at least a hundred years old but it had been upgraded inside to allow for all the modern living needs. The large wooden doors opened up to a courtyard filled with flowers and an old well that Ana informed Pete was no longer used. It was in the traditional style and each room had a cozy charm that surprised Pete. It was bright and full of life with decorations and even many windchimes each making the charming place almost feel as if it were from a fairytale. It was strange that a man like Kim would choose a place like this, but perhaps his secrets were even more plentiful than even Khun had guessed.
The house, the garden, even the little village we passed through to get to this new home looked ideal for a family. Pete was grateful the old couple had originally come from Thailand. He is quick at learning new languages but he know it would take months to learn another new one. Pete had decided to learn as fast as possible so his children could also speak both Thai and Japanese as they grew up. Whether they would stay a few months or forever Pete planned to be prepared to both settle down and be able to take his children and run away again if need be, but he could get used to the quiet breezes and the sound of the windchimes by my door.
There had been very few nights he had spent alone without Vegas since the day he came home from the hospital years ago. The thought of spending every night going forward without him wasn't pleasant. He am sad. He was so many things and he am afraid. This wasn't the life they were supposed to have. How dare Vegas throw them away so easily because that is what he did. He threw them away. Vegas threw Pete away. The dark somber angry thoughts ran raging in Pete's head and heart. Wasn't Pete's love worth more than a strangers ass to him? Pete would have died loving Vegas. Worse Pete worried he might still. He had to bury this fucking love so he can be whole again. He has to lay it to rest for something he loves more. Two somethings he loves more.
Pete sat in the old rocking chair holding his stomachtalking to his children to the memory of Vegas and to the wind. "I know it is selfish to leave like I did. I know it's selfish to runaway taking our children with me. I have given everything to the man I loved more than myself for over two years. I don't know what I am doing and I don't know how this will end but I know I cant forgive him and I know I can't raise my children in a house with a man I can't trust." Pete let all his feeling flow with the tears he cried alone.
"I know your Dad would love you both as best he could, I am so sorry babies please let Papa be selfish for just a little while. Someday I will make it up to you. Someday when it doesn't hurt so much anymore."
