The low hum of the car engine mixed with the soft tunes of pop music playing on the stereo. Ethan Cline drummed his fingers on the steering wheel, lost in thought as he cruised down the dark, winding road. The familiar ache in his chest returned as his mind drifted back to the past year. Life had been rough, to say the least. Ever since he and his ex had split up after eight long years together, it felt like a part of him had been torn away.
Ethan sighed, glancing at the empty passenger seat beside him. Nights like this used to be filled with laughter and conversations that made the miles pass by unnoticed. Now, they were a reminder of what he had lost. The silence was deafening, even with the music playing. He tried to focus on the road ahead, but his thoughts kept pulling him back to the what-ifs and could-have-beens.
He turned the volume up a notch, hoping the music might drown out the loneliness that had settled deep within him. But no matter how loud he played it, the emptiness remained. It had been a year of struggling to move on, trying to find meaning in his days, and failing to fill the void his ex had left behind.
The road stretched out before him, dark and endless, much like the future he couldn't quite envision yet. All he could do was keep driving, hoping that somewhere down the line, things would start to make sense again. Little did he know, this night was about to change everything.
Everything Ethan used to ever know was no more. The road was quiet, an endless void stretching out before him. It felt like a drag, especially on his way home from work, but since it was his 'weekend' off, he preferred to take the scenic route. As he drove, he couldn't help but feel a pang of nostalgia for the days when life felt simpler, happier.
The trees lining the road blurred into a dark, indistinct mass as his mind wandered. He missed the comfort of familiarity, the sense of belonging he once had. Now, every drive felt like an attempt to escape the ghosts of his past, but no matter how far he went, they always seemed to follow.
Ethan sighed, glancing at the clock on the dashboard. It was late, and the world around him was asleep. He envied that peace, the ability to shut off and forget, even for a little while. As the song on the radio faded out, replaced by another slow, melancholic tune, he felt the weight of his loneliness pressing down on him even more.
His thoughts were interrupted by a sudden, bright light in his rearview mirror. Squinting, he tried to make out what it was, but before he could react, everything around him shifted. The car jolted, and a strange, otherworldly sensation washed over him. Panic surged through Ethan as the familiar landscape dissolved into a blur of colors and shapes. The road, the trees, the darkness—all vanished in an instant.
Everything felt like a blur in this moment. There was a loud hum, unlike anything he'd ever heard before, and then the sharp, piercing sound of metal scraping against metal. The force rocked him back and forth, and he slammed his head hard against the steering wheel. Pain exploded in his skull, and the world around him dimmed.
