chapter two

lea woke up with a pounding headache the next morning. her first day back at work under delivered. so much so that she called devon for some sort of consolation to which he replied, you're overthinking, just do your job, and she doesn't have to like you but who cares.

that last part caused lea to stir under the covers. it's so matter of fact and yet they've exchanged less than three sentences. lea went to caitlin clark's instagram to unfollow her. turns out she wasn't following that girl to begin with.

she drove herself to work in the morning, pursing her lips for most of the drive. in exactly a week, the indiana fever would be playing their first preseason game. these are her last days of drizzle before the storm.

as lea pulled into the arena's parking lot, another car pulled in from the opposite side. she doesn't know if it was her or that black lexus that came in the wrong way but now they're awkwardly facing each other. the car honked and lea immediately rolled down the window.

"hey! can you at least back up?" lea exclaims, sticking her head out the window.

the car honked once more after she spoke and lea's eyes narrowed in agitation. she couldn't see through the other car with the sunlight reflecting harshly onto the window.

"lea!" she heard as a brunette with a hat on popped out the window. "it's caitlin."

of course it's you caitlin.

"caitlin?" lea replied, scratching the side of her head. "do you mind moving?"

"right." lea faintly heard her say.

a moment later she backed the car up so lea had space to pull into the spot that was once between them. caitlin then pulled into the one on the opposite side.

lea huffed and pulled down her pesky flyaways in the rearview mirror. she disconnected the aux, tucked her phone in her back pocket, grabbed her bag and jingly lanyard, and got out the car. she unintentionally slammed the door.

clearly she didn't stall enough because caitlin got out of her car at the same time. so lea spun her lanyard around in circles as she walked towards the entrance door.

"hey, you running away from me?"

caitlin stifled a chuckle from behind her. that was enough for lea to turn around and get a proper look at her. she was in indiana fever uniform and had neon green shoes on. the only contrast was her loose hair wavyish hair and iowa hawkeye hat.

lea gulped and licked her lips.

"sorry, did it seem like i was?" lea asked, an unintentional smile creeping up on her face. she was just genuinely curious if that's how she came across.

the taller one caught up to her in a few long strides. she briefly pressed her lips together in thought before shaking her head.

"i'm a bad driver though so i get it if you were." she shrugged and smiled with her full set of teeth as palmed the center of her hat.

caitlin held the door open for lea. try hard.

"you can't be good at everything, caitlin." lea stated.
