A week after our exhilarating mountain biking adventure, Jett's voice broke the morning calm as I prepared for another showdown on the motocross track. "Hey, Lily, ready to see how fast I can leave you in the dust?"
I turned, grinning at his cocky stance. "You wish, Lawrence. Last time was just a warm-up."
With our bikes revving, we lined up at the starting line. The crowd buzzed with anticipation, but between us, there was a charged silence, each of us eyeing the other with a mix of competition and something more.
The signal to start blared, and we shot off, our bikes kicking up a storm of dust and adrenaline. The first few laps were a dance of speed and strategy, Jett taking the lead early on with a daring maneuver around a tight corner.
"You're fast, Lawrence," I called out as I closed the gap, our bikes almost touching on the straightaway. "But I'm not giving up that easily."
He laughed, glancing over his shoulder with a playful gleam in his eyes. "Come on, Matthews. Show me what you've got."
We jockeyed for position, overtaking each other with calculated risks and close calls that sent our hearts racing faster than our bikes. The banter between us turned flirty, teasing each other about missed opportunities and bold moves.
"You're good, Lily," Jett admitted as we rounded a hairpin turn, our bikes leaning into the curve in sync. "But you're not catching me today."
I grinned, feeling the rush of the race and the thrill of our playful competition. "We'll see about that, Lawrence. Don't count me out just yet."
As we approached the final stretch, neck and neck once again, I seized the opportunity, edging past Jett with a burst of speed that left him laughing in surprise. Crossing the finish line first, I pumped my fist in victory, adrenaline coursing through my veins.
Jett pulled up beside me, his helmet off and his grin infectious. "Well played, Lily. You got me fair and square."
I smirked, catching my breath and reveling in the exhilaration of the race. "Told you not to underestimate me, Lawrence."
Our bikes parked side by side, we cooled down and shared water, the competitive edge softened by our shared laughter and easy camaraderie. As we packed up our gear, Jett turned to me with a smirk.
