"Same time next week for a rematch?" Jett asked with a playful smirk, leaning casually against his bike as we packed up our gear.
I glanced over at him, raising an eyebrow. "Oh, you're on, Lawrence. But don't think I'll go easy on you this time."
He chuckled, tossing his helmet onto the seat of his bike. "Good to hear. I wouldn't have it any other way."
As we stowed away our helmets and gloves, the atmosphere between us was charged with a mix of competitive spirit and undeniable chemistry. I caught Jett stealing glances at me when he thought I wasn't looking, his gaze lingering a moment longer than necessary.
"So, Lily," he began casually, walking over to where I was checking the tire pressure on my bike. "You've been keeping secrets from me."
I arched an eyebrow, pretending innocence. "Secrets? Whatever do you mean, Jett?"
He grinned, a mischievous sparkle in his eyes. "Come on, you didn't tell me you had moves like that. Saving your best for last, huh?"
I laughed, a playful lightness in my tone. "Maybe I just like to keep you on your toes, Lawrence. Can't give away all my tricks too soon."
Jett nodded approvingly, leaning closer as if sharing a secret. "Fair enough. But next time, I'll be ready for you."
Our conversation flowed effortlessly, punctuated by shared laughter and the occasional playful shove. We talked about everything from our favorite race tracks to the most ridiculous wipeouts we'd witnessed over the years.
As the sun began to set, casting a warm golden hue over the track, Jett suggested we grab a bite to eat at a nearby diner known for its post-race grub. I agreed enthusiastically, eager to continue our banter off the track.
At the diner, we sat across from each other in a cozy booth, trading stories over burgers and milkshakes. The conversation flowed easily, our competitive edge from the track now softened into easy camaraderie and flirtatious teasing.
"So, Jett," I began with a sly grin, swirling the straw in my milkshake. "What's your biggest fear? Besides losing to me, of course."
He laughed, leaning back against the booth with a thoughtful expression. "Hmm, good question. I'd say spiders, definitely spiders."
I pretended to shiver dramatically. "Spiders? Really? You ride a dirt bike for a living, and spiders scare you?"
Jett shrugged, a sheepish grin spreading across his face. "Hey, they're small but sneaky. Can't trust 'em."
Our conversation continued late into the evening, each topic flowing seamlessly into the next. By the time we finished our meal, I realized with a twinge of surprise how comfortable I felt around Jett, how easy it was to be myself in his presence.
