iii: nayeon

AFTER the disastrous encounter with Jeongyeon, I couldn't focus on anything else for days. My thoughts raced as I headed straight to Mrs. Park's office. I needed to get this partnership situation sorted out before it spiraled out of control.

Mrs. Park looked up from her papers as I barged in, looking surprised but not necessarily displeased. "Im Nayeon," she said, her tone measured. "What brings you here?"

I took a deep breath and forced a smile. "I wanted to talk about the research project partners," I began, trying to sound as casual as possible. "I'm not sure if Jeongyeon and I are the best fit for each other."

Mrs. Park leaned back in her chair, her eyes assessing me over the rim of her glasses. "Why is that?" she asked, her voice calm and composed.

I paused, trying to think of a reason that didn't make me sound like a snob. "Well, we have different... working styles," I said finally. "And we're both quite busy with extracurriculars."

Mrs. Park nodded, considering my words. "I understand your concerns," she said. "But the whole point of this exercise is to challenge you to work with someone you wouldn't normally collaborate with. It's about growth and expanding your horizons."

My frustration grew. "But Mrs. Park, I've been president of the student council for six years," I protested. "Surely, you can see the importance of pairing me with someone who can keep up with my pace and understands the pressures I'm under."

Her expression softened slightly. "Nayeon, I know you're under a lot of pressure," she said. "But sometimes, the best way to grow is to face challenges head-on. Jeongyeon has a lot to offer, and I believe the two of you can learn a lot from each other."

I felt a sinking feeling in my stomach. "But Mrs. Park, I really think this is a mistake," I pleaded.

She stood up, signaling the end of our conversation. "I appreciate your honesty, Nayeon," she said firmly. "But the partners are final. Now, I expect you to give this your best effort. Don't disappoint me."

With no other choice, I left her office feeling defeated. I couldn't believe I was stuck with Jeongyeon for this crucial project.

Momo, who was waiting for me outside the faculty room asked, "How did it go?" as she walked with me.

"She said that the pairs were final," I groaned. "You're so lucky you were paired with Mina. That girl barely talks."

Momo laughed. "Yeah, and she's smart too."

"I hate you," I muttered and she chuckled

"Have you and Jeongyeon talked again after that whole fiasco?" she asked. I shook my head. "Well, what the hell are you two waiting for? If you badly want to get away from her, start on that research project as early as you can, so you can finish it early."

I knew Momo was right, but the thought of facing Jeongyeon again after she called me a spoiled brat left a sour taste in my mouth. Plus, she hadn't even had the decency to apologize. I fumed at the memory.

As we turned the corner into the bustling hallway, my eyes fell upon Sana and Jihyo. They were standing together, their heads bent in conversation, and their hands were intertwined. Something about the sight made my heart jump. It was as if they were sharing a secret, a secret that didn't include me.
