"I CAN'T go," I said to Momo. She is throwing this crazy party later at night on her parents beach house in Mungchapo Beach, but I told Jeongyeon that we're going to start the research tonight.

"Come on!" Sana said, pulling my hand. "You can't miss this party! Your crush will be there!"

"Crush?" Jihyo and Momo asked in chorus.

Good God. I rolled my eyes at Sana. "He was my crush back in elementary school," I said, downplaying it.

Momo and Jihyo looked at each other, raising their eyebrows. "Well, that's news to me," Momo said, her voice filled with mischief.

Jihyo leaned in closer, her eyes sparkling with excitement. "You never told us!" she exclaimed.

I couldn't help but roll my eyes again. "It was ages ago. Like, when we were, what, twelve?"

"But it's Mingyu!" Sana squealed. "He's totally crush-worthy, even now!"

Mingyu was a star soccer player back in our middle school days. He used to be the captain of the football's team until Jeongyeon took over. He had this boyish charm that had all the girls swooning. But we had all moved on, or so I thought.

"I can't believe you've had a crush on him all this time and never said anything!" Jihyo said, her voice filled with mock-shock.

"It's not a big deal, okay?" I protested. "It's not like it's relevant now."

But as I watched Momo and Sana exchange knowing smiles, I knew they weren't going to let it go. They had always loved poking fun at my love life—or lack thereof.

"You can totally ask him out tonight!" Sana whispered, her eyes gleaming with excitement.

"I'm not asking him out," I said firmly. "It's just a party."

Momo chuckled. "Right, because you totally don't still have feelings for him."

I shot her a glare. "I don't have feelings for him."

"Sure, sure," Jihyo said, her voice dripping with sarcasm. They laughed, and I couldn't help but smile despite myself.

But when I saw Jeongyeon walking towards us, her football uniform clinging to her sweaty body, the smile slipped from my face. She looked annoyed, as if my very presence was an inconvenience. "Ready to go?" she barked, her eyes scanning the hallway for an escape route.

I nodded stiffly, ignoring the smirks on my friends' faces. "See you guys later," I said, shutting my locker with a bang.

The walk to the library was awkward. Jeongyeon's long strides made it difficult for me to keep up, and I was painfully aware of the stares we were drawing. The hallways of Seoul International School had never felt so long or so crowded.

We finally reached the library, the sanctuary of the studious and the over-caffeinated. The air was thick with the scent of old books and the faint hum of quiet whispers. Jeongyeon claimed a table in the corner, as far from the other students as possible.

As we pulled out our laptops and notes, the silence between us was deafening. I couldn't shake the feeling that she was judging me, that she saw me as nothing but a shallow, popular girl with no substance.
