When Lorraine walked down the hallway of Hawkins High, she could feel eyes glaring at her— even if there weren't any. That's why she kept her eyes on the ground, counting how many steps it would take to get to her locker each day, sometimes there was more, sometimes less. But it always took her at least twenty five for her to get to the next step of her day.

"Eleven, six, eighty three," Lorraine mumbled to herself, turning and twisting the lock. Once she heard the click, she moved the door open to place her belongings inside as always. What wasn't part of her day was when Jonathan showed up by her side, hands fidgeting with his camera. "Good morning Jonathan," she greeted, a quick flash of a smile.

"Just curious, are you working the shift later? Because I'd rather have to deal with annoying customers with someone than alone."

"It's a school night, barely anyone would be there," reasoned Lorraine, shutting her locker closed. Her hair stayed in her usual braid, presentable as always. "But if it means free popcorn and M&M's, then yes I do have a shift later— I'll have to be at the Wheeler's after, your brother asked me to join their game once more."

Jonathan laughed, walking beside the girl. The two talked about their night before, catching up on their families. Of course, Carol Perkins overheard their conversation and gave out a laugh. "Popcorn and M&M's? As expected from the lunatic and her loser boyfriend," she sneered, Tommy H laughing along with her words with his arm slung around her shoulders (knowing well that the two weren't even close to dating). Steve Harrington stood with them, watching the pair walk to their first period. He wondered as to how and why they remained friends, or how Lorraine even had a friend. For someone who kept to herself, she's only ever talkative around the Byers. For someone who kept to herself, she clearly hasn't spoken any other word to Steve unless it's 'here' while passing back papers. "Steve?" asked Carol, snapping him out of his thoughts and turning his attention to his friend. "I said don't you think Looney Lori is dressed even weirder today?"

It was true, she wore a weird fleece on top of a button up, a skirt that went above her knees— as if she was some school girl. Steve scrunched his face at her look. "Oh yeah, everyday seems as if she's gone crazier."

"Have fun in class with that," Tommy then said, beginning to walk down the halls with Carol. Steve groaned as he followed his two friends.

"Do you realize how annoying it is to have her sit in front of me?" He told them. "Everytime she does score higher, Click then says 'oh why don't you be more like her?'"

His friend rolled her eyes. "By like her, he means boring, gross, and has no purpose in life." Steve laughed at her words before spotting Nancy, excusing himself from the group to go talk to the girl. One thing Carol got right in his mind, Lorraine Jennings did not have a purpose here in Hawkins.

"And with that, I hope you all finished the homework assigned last night," Mrs. Click announced, the dark haired boy cursing under his breath. He swore he remembered to do it— well, he remembered to do it at the moment. With pursed lips he tapped Lorraine's shoulder, leaning forward to whisper something.

"Hey, Jennings, would it be possible if I could just... take a look at your paper?" Harrington asked, Lorraine spared him a glance before sighing. Digging through her binder, she passed it back to him.

"Here," she told him, a pursed lip smile before she turned to face the board. Steve thanked whatever was in the heavens for making him sit behind her, otherwise he wouldn't be copying down the answers at this very moment. Once he finished, he tapped her shoulder again only to give back the paper. Class went on as usual, Mrs. Click with her lecture, Lorraine eagerly paying attention and Steve definitely not. But when their teacher began to pass back their test scores, it brought an internal, agonizing pain to Steve.

He watched as Mrs. Click gave Lorraine's paper to the girl, her small smile appearing on her face. Of course, the girl got nothing but a perfect score. He then watched as his teacher placed his paper on his table, face side down. "I believe you'd benefit from some tutoring instead of trying to talk to Ms. Thompson right here."

Steve slid down his seat as the class erupted in laughter, hiding his face in his hands. He got a quick peep of Lorraine, snickering at Mrs. Click's suggestion. How he wanted to wipe that laugh off her face.
