Grace

As I closed the envelope with the last letter safely tucked inside, I noticed hot tears running heavily down my face. I covered my mouth with both hands to cover a loud sob. When the sobs didn't stop coming, I gave up and buried myself in my cold hospital bed. The stark white walls reflected the light from the open window making the whole room so much brighter. My dry throat stung from my cries, but they wouldn't stop.
"Grace?" A familiar voice came from behind me and I sat up straight only to see a short nurse standing by the door. The contrast of her dark hair and the fluorescent room hurt my tired eyes.
"Yeah?" I sniffled.
She gave me a sympathetic smile that I'm sure she didn't mean to seem condescending but it still irked me. "Your parents are on their way back from Aruba, but they won't be back until tomorrow. Is there anyone else I could call?"
I groaned despite the fact that I didn't mind a day to myself. But, I mean, I was I'm a coma for sixteen months, you'd think they'd postpone their vacation to stay with me. It's been about a week since I woke up and the only people I've seen are doctors and nurses.
"Could you call this number?" I dug back through the stack of papers to find the piece that had my best friends parents new home phone number on it in his messy handwriting. I handed her the wrinkled paper and she happily took it to the desk outside my room to dial the phone.
She returned in the doorway and handed me the phone. "Grace, darling! Your mother called us, it will be so wonderful to see you up and about again. We've all missed you here, we're so glad you're getting better sweetie!" She sounded so cheerful over the phone and I cringed from the volume at which she was talking.
"Hello, Mrs. Graham. It's so nice to speak to you again, but could I talk to Henry?" I scrape up my energy to give her my cheeriest voice and best manners.
"Oh honey, you're just polite as ever aren't you! Henry's back in Hollymoore, didn't he write you one of those cute letters?" She sounds much happier then she should when talking about her son in a hospital.
"Oh okay. Well thanks anyway, I guess."
"Get well soon sweetheart!"
"Goodbye Mrs. Graham." I hang up before she can say anything else, even though I feel rude a second after.
Henry's back in Hollymoore Psychiatric hospital. Is he okay? Why didn't he write me a letter? I Have to go see him. I immediately push the big blue button, calling the nurse back to my room.
"Here's the phone back." I hand her the phone and she quickly turns away. "Wait! Ma'am?"
"Yes Grace?"
"I know I can't be discharged without my parents, but could I take a walk around. Iv'e kinda been in bed awhile." I give a short laugh and she lets out a heavy sigh that feels a tad condescending.
"Honey, we don't even know if you can walk yet. Everything from the crash did heal, but we aren't sure about the long-lasting physical and mental effects. Tomorrow in physical therapy we'll see."
"Do you know how Henry Graham is doing in the psychiatric hospital?"
"That information is only available to staff and family." She states in a very uninviting, monotone voice.
"But you do know him, yeah." I ask, still hopeful.
"Yes."
"If I can't go, is he aloud to visit me."
"Mr. Graham has not been aloud to leave since his most recent admission to Hollymoore."
"If I can walk tomorrow can I visit him." I begin to get very frustrated and her face shows she's feeling the same.
"I suppose that depends on the doctor, he is aloud visitors."
I nod slowly as she turns away, exasperated. The rest of my night is spent trying my best not to worry about Henry. I fall asleep thinking about how different he might be.
