Chapter 6 | Blood On My Shoes

Third person POV:

There hasn't been a murder for nearly two weeks, which should be something relieving, but it only worried Cairo more.

She knew that the murderer wasn't done. She didn't know when they would strike next, and it scared her.

A twig snapped. Cairo's head whipped around, the wind gushing in her face. CC's right leg was raised, her eyes wide and her mouth agape. "My bad."

Cairo's eyes relax. "You're going to give me a heart attack someday. C'mon, walk beside me."

CC stumbles to her side, plucking a leaf off of her shoulder. "So.. Why are we in the murder forest again?" Cairo rolls her eyes. "Please stop calling it that."

"Okayy, fine. But you haven't answered my question." Cairo crouches down, inspecting the ground beneath her. "I'm wondering if there's any clues that will track us to the murderer, or at least why they're killing people."

CC kicks a piles of leaves beside her, "Anddd, why am I here?" 

"Because everyone is busy. Loxley and Ally are on a date, and Caleb's at his Dungeons And Dragons club. You're the only person I could turn to, as annoying as you are." Cairo mutters the last few words before getting up and walking to a different spot.

"Hey I am not annoy!-" A face-full of leaves interrupt CC. She spits and swats at the branch, breaking herself free. "Cairo!" She scowls, but Cairo wasn't in front of her anymore.

"Cairo?" Her eyes look around trying to catch a glimpse of the girl. She eventually finds her behind a wide tree. "Geez I thought you left me there for a second." CC breathes out, "You know it's like the nature hates me. Bugs keep following me and tree branches are all up in my face I don't even know-" "Stop."

CC looks to Cairo, "Huh?"

"Look." She stands up from a ground, a piece of paper clutched in her hand. CC leaned over her shoulder to get a better look at it. "Holy shit."

Meet me at the big oak tree.

Don't screw it up this time, R didn't work well.

"E6? The fuck is E6?" CC scowls, "Do you think this has to do something with the murder?"

"Of course!" Cairo yells a little to loudly. "R stands for Roman, the second suspect. He was found around the edge of the forest, while Freida was found in the exact middle." CC gives her a concerned glance, Cairo recognizing. "I spent a lot of time digging up research." She adds. "It's scary how fast your brain works, I wouldn't have thought R stood for Roman."

 Cairo smiles thankfully, "I'm grateful for your hint of a slight complement, but my point is, it seems like their goal is to try and plant every body in the center of the forest."

"Which must take a lot of time I bet.." CC mumbles, as she turns around, looking behind to the cluster of never ending trees. You have no idea how long they've been trekking in the forest.

"This doesn't look old at all though." CC says, turning her attention back to the piece of paper. "Which means..?"

"Which means they're going to plant a body." The pieces click in Cairo's mind, causing a spark of curiosity. Her eyes quickly dart around the surrounding forest. "There!" She quickly runs mindlessly ahead, catching CC off guard. "Hey- Wait!"

She picks up her pace, following Cairo and soon sees what she's running towards.

There was a huge oak tree that had thick branches and roots sprouting from it's trunk. "This has to be where E6 wanted to meet up with whoever they're partnering with." Cairo sputters, catching her breath.
