Maia Richards (born January 21, 2002) is an American actress best known for her role as Robin Buckley in the Netflix science fiction series Stranger Things (2019-present). She has also appeared in films such as 2021's Fear Street: 1978, 2022's Bodies Bodies Bodies, Bullet Train, 2023's Spiderman: Across the Spider-Verse, Barbie, Bottoms, and 2024's Mean Girls and Inside Out 2.
𝐏𝐄𝐑𝐒𝐎𝐍𝐀𝐋 𝐋𝐈𝐅𝐄
Richards was born on January 21, 2002 in West Des Moines, Iowa. She attended Dowling Catholic High School alongside her childhood best friend, Caitlin Clark, a point guard for the Iowa Hawkeyes. While Clark focused on basketball, Richards thrived in the school's drama department, eventually landing the role of Robin Buckley (Stranger Things) in 2019, at only 17. After Richards' debut in the third season of Stranger Things, she took a break from acting to attend college at Stanford University. At Stanford, Richards shared a dorm with collegiate basketball player Cameron Brink. In an early interview, Richards said:
"A lot of my friends are ballers, 'cause I grew up going to Caitlin's AAU tournaments. After the game, Cait and her teammates would usually get food, and I'd always tag along - so I got to know a lot of them pretty well. That's where I met Cam [Brink]".
Besides Brink, Richards has named Aaliyah Boston (Indiana Fever), Angel Reese (LSU), Hailey Van Lith (LSU), Kate Martin (Iowa), and Paige Bueckers (Uconn) as people she met through her friendship with Caitlin Clark.

2021
After completing her freshman year at Stanford, Richards officially dropped out to pursue her acting career. A few months later, Fear Street: 1978 released on July 8, 2021, marking Maia Richards' film debut as Ziggy. The supernatural slasher flick was a box office success, and Richards quickly became a fan favorite alongside her character.
2022
Her second movie, an American comedy horror film titled Bodies Bodies Bodies, released on March 14, 2022. Her portrayal of Bee gained attention on video music app Tiktok, adding to Maia Richards' fast-growing following. The fourth season of Stranger Things premiered just two months after the release of Bodies Bodies Bodies, featuring her reprisal of Robin. The up-and-coming actress closed out 2022 with Bullet Train, an action comedy film featuring an ensemble cast comprised of Brad Pitt, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Brian Tyree Henry, to name a few. She acted as The Prince, a young but intelligent operative with morally ambiguous motives.
2023
Maia Richards opened 2023 with her first appearance in an animated film, voicing LYLA in Spiderman: Across the Spider-Verse. Approximately one month after Spiderman's release (June 2, 2023), Richards returned to live action media with the release of Greta Gerwig's Barbie on July 21, 2023. Although her role was a minor one (Physicist Barbie, who is mentioned to have won a Nobel Prize), Richards said in an interview:
"..filming Barbie was the coolest thing. It really was an environment that I could be totally myself in, and not worry about negative perception. Working with women that I'd looked up to my entire life, like Margot [Robbie] and Greta [Gerwig], was so surreal. I'll never forget it".
After Barbie, the actress led the satirical coming-of-age comedy Bottoms (August 25, 2023) with co-star and friend Ayo Edebiri.
2024
Recently, Richards has starred as Cady Heron in the musical revival of Mean Girls, which hit theaters on January 12, 2024. Notably, Mean Girls marks the only movie in Maia Richards' career that has allowed her to showcase her vocal range (although being in many leading roles during her high school drama career). Her most recent film is Inside Out 2, released on June 14, 2024. Maia voices Anxiety, a new emotion in Riley Anderson's (Kensington Tallman) head.
