real life, present (azzi's POV)
In hindsight, this was a terrible idea.
Maia hadn't spoken to Paige since she'd arrived, swallowing her initial reaction ("What the fuck?") and refusing to talk since. Morgan had gotten a few sentences out of her - she was unwilling to be rude to the freshman - but that was it. Her lips were pressed into a firm line. Her eyes never left the court. She sulked in silence all game. It was only when the buzzer sounded that she jumped to her feet, practically running to find Nika and Aaliyah.
Paige watched her go with an unreadable expression, a convoluted stare that had followed Maia since she'd left. Even as Paige's face molded into desperation, Maia didn't turn around. She turned to Nika instead, gluing herself to the Croatian's side. It was as if Nika was a barrier, or a lifeline. Either way, Maia trailed her like a shadow, following the girl closely as we walked to the restaurant.
