The start of the semester at Blackwell was always something that excited the students of the academy, returning to daily life with their friends, spending entire afternoons lounging in the green areas of the building playing board games, singing, painting, or simply enjoying the breeze.
For Hailey Stonem, amidst all her troubles, returning to Arcadia Bay meant freedom, at least more than she could hope to have in Grainge Falls, the town where she lived and where the imposing Stonem residence stood majestically among meticulously manicured gardens and tall laurel hedges. Owned by July and Russell, a distinguished and wealthy couple, the home reflected their status and refined tastes. The family was known in the community for their deep-rooted conservatism and for being demanding with their only daughter.
Every detail of the mansion, from its marble columns to the gracefully waving silk curtains, spoke of a life marked by luxury and the family traditions that framed the existence of the blonde.
However, while she also had to worry about her extracurricular activities and meet her parents' expectations, she could be sure that at the end of the day, she would have her own space and peace for at least 18 weeks, more than enough to recharge and return to her cloistered reality in Grainge Falls.
The road to Arcadia Bay with Dave, the family chauffeur, was something she was used to. Her parents didn't have time to even see her off at the front door of the residence. After all, Russell Stonem was too busy with his business dealings to spare time for his only daughter, and Judy Stonem was submissive enough not to contradict her husband. With every curve, the air carried the fresh scent of the nearby sea.
As they entered Arcadia Bay, signs pointed the way to Blackwell Academy, an institution nestled among ancient trees and well-tended meadows. The entrance to the academy was marked by a wrought iron gate, guarded by ancient oaks that seemed to tell stories of past generations.
Minutes later, Hailey was already unloading her belongings and walking towards the dormitories, where Room 222 awaited her. The air was laden with the freshness of the ocean and the soft crunch of leaves under her feet. Each step towards the academy represented a momentary escape from the rigidity of her home in Grainge Falls.
"Here's the last suitcase, Miss Stonem" Dave announced, handing over a small blue suitcase to the blonde. His eyes reflected a mix of concern and affection. "Remember all your parents' instructions and don't hesitate to call me if anything happens."
"Thank you, Dave" Hailey replied with a smile, nodding. Dave was truly one of the few people who genuinely cared about her. "Goodbye, princess" Dave bid farewell, with a faint smile.
"Goodbye, take care on the way back." Hailey said, watching him climb into the black car and drive off towards Grainge Falls. A sigh escaped the young girl's lips, a mixture of relief and sadness. She turned on her heels and headed towards the dormitory once the car was out of sight.
Entering her room, number 222 welcomed her with a comforting familiarity. The afternoon passed quickly as she made her bed, unpacked and stored her clothes in the closet. She hung a couple of photos she had taken during the summer to liven up the greyish room: one at the beach with Taylor, another in a park in Italy, and the last one at a party with her group of friends.
"This place needs a little 'life.'" She murmured to herself, placing a small vase with plastic flowers on the desk, a gift from her mother. Another fake thing in her life to add to the list. Once she was ready, she decided it was time to go out for a walk in search of food. She closed the door and headed towards the cafeteria, hoping to find something to satisfy her appetite.
Upon arrival, the cafeteria was in full swing. As she opened the door, she was greeted by an explosion of noise and activity. Some students greeted each other enthusiastically, others laughed in groups, engaged in lively conversations, everyone trying to catch up after the summer.
