Chapter One

When Callie got home from Juvie she was forced to join her family for dinner by Stef. She tried to argue that she wasn’t hungry, but Stef knew enough to know that prison food was never enough of a meal.

If she knew I hadn’t eaten anything in a day and a half because I was in solitary.

Callie shook herself out of that thought. Stef would force her to eat plates of food but with the way she had nightmares after nightmares while in the small, dark room, she felt like throwing up just thinking about it. Food wasn’t what she wanted right now. She wanted her bed. She wanted to feel safe in her own room that she shared with Mariana. She wanted to feel safe.

Callie sighed as she sat down at the table. She pushed around the food on her plate. Taking a bite every few seconds, not wanting Lena and Stef to be concerned. When she was done she was going to excuse herself but just as she was leaving the table Stef called her.

“Everyone to your rooms, work on any homework you haven’t already done. Callie, hang back.” Stef said and Callie resisted the urge to roll her eyes.

Callie sighed and sat back down at the table. “What’s up?”

“Look, I know being back in Juvie must have been hard,” Callie nodded, agreeing. “So, that’s why we’re going to let you adjust back to being home and let you have the rest of the week off from school,” Lena said. Callie was grateful but worried at the same time, so she just nodded again.

“Callie, is there anything we can do?” Stef asked.

“Can I go upstairs and work on the homework I’ve missed?” Callie asked.

Lena sighed. “Yeah, you can. I sat the assignments on your bed.” Callie nodded and rushed off. Lena turned to Stef when she was sure Callie was upstairs. “What do we do?” Lena asked, sitting down at the table, holding a cup of tea in her hands.

Stef ran a hand through her hair. “I don’t know, love,” Stef said, walking towards Lena and pulled her into a hug.

Upstairs

Callie went into her bedroom and saw Mariana on her bed on her laptop with earbuds in. Callie didn’t know if Marian did that on purpose, but she was grateful when Mariana didn’t say anything. Callie grabbed her earbuds and phone and started to play some music.

Callie was in the middle of reading a book for her English class when she felt her eyes getting heavy. She tried to stay awake but fell asleep with the book on her chest, earbuds and phone on the side table.

Mariana looked over and saw Callie passed out and she frowned. Her sister had been silent since coming home. Only talking when directly talked to. She was worried and felt guilty. Callie was worried about Mariana and looked for her. Because Callie was looking for her she got in the car with Troy.

Mariana sighed. She was a mess when she was taking Jesus’ pills, and she brought her sister down with her. She was grateful Callie was cleared of all charges but couldn’t help but feel like something was really wrong with her sister. Mariana got off her bed and grabbed a blanket. She walked over to Callie’s bed. She took the book out of Callie’s hands, got the notebooks and textbooks off of the bed and put everything on the bedside table before covering her with the blanket. She turned the room’s light off and went back to her bed. She turned her laptop’s brightness down and worked on her homework.

It was an hour later when she heard whimpering coming from Callie’s bed that lasted for a few minutes and as she was about to get up, Callie stopped. She listened for any heavy breathing and figured Callie had just had a strange dream. She shut off her laptop and got into bed.

-------------

The next morning Callie woke up at 9 am from a nightmare. She sat up, sweat covering her forehead and was relieved when she saw Mariana’s bed empty. Callie was tempted to fall back asleep, but she didn’t want to have any more nightmares, so she sighed, went to the bathroom and then downstairs.

Callie thought she would find Stef somewhere downstairs but was surprised when she saw Lena sitting at the breakfast nook.

“Hey, slug a bug, how did you sleep?” Lena got up, moved over to Callie and kissed her forehead.

Lena then walked over to the sink and put her coffee mug in it and turned around to Callie when she didn’t hear her say anything.

“Callie, are you okay?” Lena asked walking closer to Callie.

“Yeah. Just a little tired I guess.” Callie told her.

“You sure that’s all it is?” Lena asked and pulled her into a hug. She felt Callie nod and tightened her grip on Callie. She didn’t know if Callie was telling the truth, but she wanted to comfort her if she wasn’t. “Have some toast okay? I’ll be in the living room working on some school paperwork.” Lena told Callie, pulling back from the hug, kissing her forehead and then walking out of the room.

Callie nodded and gave Lena a small smile. She walked to the bread keeper and pulled out a slice of bread. She put it in the toaster and grabbed some orange juice as she was waiting.

Callie sighed just as the toast popped up. She put some jam on it, quickly ate it and drank the juice. She cleaned the plate and glass she used, put them in the drying rack and then walked upstairs, ready to attempt her homework again.

She was trying to work on her homework for nearly an hour when she started to nod off. She fell asleep and hoped for no nightmares.

…. She wasn’t that lucky.
