After I assured the boys that it was ok to be near me and that I wasn't going to hurt them or anything they told me who they were.
"I'm Darrel Curtis and these are my brothers, Sodapop Curtis and Ponyboy Curtis." He said. I thought he was joking at first but then I realized that he really wasn't joking.
"Those are some really cool names. I've never heard anything like them before." I said. They are some unusual but unique names. And another plus, they seem really nice.
"What's your name?" Ponyboy asks me. I thought that I already told them my name. Guess not.
"My name is Y/n. Y/n Y/l/n." I said. I hadn't wanted to tell them my last name, but it was only fair since they told me theirs.
"Like as in, Y/f/n? Like him?" Sodapop had asked me. I guess my father really did grow up here.
"Yeah, as in him. But don't worry, I'm nothing like my father. I have my mothers personality and temper. She didn't have one so no need to worry about that one with me." I can't believe I just said that. I said it before I had time to stop myself. Now they're going to ask questions.
"Ok. it's just that, our parents had history with your dad. So we just thought that you were like him. And we're sorry for your loss." Darrel had said. I'm intrigued as to what history my dad had with their parents. And my curiosity gets the better of me so I ask.
"What history? And it's fine. She's been gone for a while now. I just had to force myself to learn how to live without her. I'm sorry for your loss." I said. My curiosity had gotten the better of me. I need to work on that.
"Your dad is the reason our parents are dead. Your dad and our dad had gotten into an argument over the phone and it apparently was only supposed to be our dad in the car instead of both our parents. Your dad was drunk and driving on the wrong side of the road and hit our parents head on. Someone was in the car with your dad when it happened." Darrel had told me. I feel so bad. Wait, so dad is the reason mom's dead?
"My mom was in the car with him. But, he said that she died because she had a brain tumor or something. He said that he was taking her to the hospital to get it fixed and she was pregnant with my little brother at the time." I said. It felt like my whole entire world was crashing down at that exact moment.
"Well, then your dad lied to you because we saw the whole thing happen. They had barely made it down our street that night." Sodapop said to me when he realized that I really didn't know what he was talking about. "Maybe just talk to him about it. What's the worst that could happen? He tells you you're wrong and says that you're punished?"
If only it were that easy and simple to talk to him about that night.
"Yeah. I guess you're right." I lied. Boy, were they far from right. "Well, I gotta get home. It was nice meeting you."
"Yea you too." Says Darrel. I feel like I'm gonna start seeing them more around here.
After I leave them, I start walking slower and slower. I'd never admit it to myself or anyone for that matter, but I'm completely and utterly terrified of my dad. Even though he has hurt me consecutively, over and over and over again, I know he doesn't have it in his heart to kill someone on purpose. Especially if that someone is mom. But, something about those boys saying that to me, has me thinking otherwise. When I get home I'm going to bed, because I have a long day ahead of me tomorrow. I check on dad before I go and get ready for bed. Just to make sure he's ok, I mean cause at the end of the day, he's still my dad and I love him, no matter what.
When I wake up the next morning, I'm surprised by the smell of bacon, eggs, toast and pancakes. Dad has never cooked breakfast before. EVER. And he normally leaves for work before I get up anyway. So, I cautiously walk down the stairs , through the living room, into the kitchen and I find the Curtis brothers. I have no idea what they are doing here. I don't even know how they know where I live.
