Elizabeth

"You're engaged?!" My brother's news comes unexpectedly. "You're telling me you're engaged and getting married in six months? That is so soon. How did this even happen?"

"I can't tell if you're happy or not." Luke says from the other end of the phone. "Ashley and I have been dating for a while now, and I had to keep it sort of secretive since her and Thomas have a history." The mention of his name makes my skin crawl.

Thomas. Why did my brother have to have such an ass for a best friend? All he does is irritate me and do things that get under my skin. It's so easy that it's second nature to him.

"I am happy for you. It's just that we never knew her name or met her, but now it makes sense. Listen, I would've been happy to know this information so I could have rubbed it in Thomas's face." A smirk rises to my lips at the thought of this. A heavy sigh follows.

"Elizabeth... This feud between the two of you really needs to stop."

"Hey, he's the one that hates me enough to keep it going. You aren't even in the same state anymore to come between us."

"Exactly. That should be the sole reason for this childish behavior to die off." I roll my eyes as he continues. "I do need a favor from you, though."

"What is it?"

"I need you to tell Thomas for me." What?! "Like you said, you'd love to rub it in his face even though that's not what I want from this. However, he has this dumb hatred towards you so it'll be easier on me because he'll be too busy hating you."

"Oh gee, how thoughtful." The sarcasm is thick in my voice. "Luke, I'm not doing that." I pause a moment, another smirk across my lips. "Although, it would be nice to see him turn red from head to toe."

"Great, so you'll do it?"

"What happened to you wanting this childish behavior to stop?"

"I do, but it can stop after you tell him." Ugh, I can't believe I'm agreeing to this.

"Fine, but you owe me."

"Thanks, sis. You're the best. Love you!"

"Yeah, love you too." I hang up the phone and drag my hands over my face, groaning. I can't believe I have to face Thomas and deal with him being an ass towards me.

Once I've gotten ready for the day, I grab my keys and start heading towards Thomas' house. How am I supposed to tell him this? Do I say Luke wanted me to tell him so I could take the blow of how he reacts? A sigh escapes me as I reach his house. I walk up to the door, ringing the doorbell.

The door swings open moments later revealing a shirtless Thomas with wet hair. If I wasn't so easily annoyed by him, I'd totally be fine with staring at his body.

"What are you doing here?" Yep, there it is. That's the attitude I know and hate.

"Luke sent me." I say, starting off by letting him know this wasn't voluntary. "He wanted me to inform you that he is engaged." His eyebrows rise up.

"And he didn't tell me himself, why?" I fight the urge to smirk.

"He wanted me to tell you because of who he's engaged to." He gives me a bored look. "He's engaged to Ashley. They're getting married in six months." There's a moment of silence. I can see multiple emotions flashing across his face.

"Ha ha, very funny. He wouldn't do that to me."

"Oh, but he did." I say, still fighting the urge to smirk. There's a small flash of something in his eyes, but it's gone before I have a chance to tell what it was.

"I- I don't believe this." His voice drops to a whisper, and for a split second I feel bad for him. "Why would he do that? You're not fucking with me, right?" He seems genuinely upset, and I shake my head.

"I thought I'd enjoy telling you, but I can tell this is bothering you. I'm going to go." I turn to leave, but he calls out to me.

"Elizabeth, wait." I turn back around, his eyes glassy. "Why didn't he want to tell me?"

"I- I don't know. He said it would be easier on him since we hate each other. You'd be too busy being angry at me for rubbing it in than you would be at him. Although, I'm not enjoying this as much as I thought I would."

"So, he just used you as a pawn? To take the weight off of him?" I nod and he scoffs. "I cannot believe my best friend would use his sister like this."

"Well, we are enemies." I say, trying to lighten the mood. "I am sorry, Thomas. If it makes you feel any better, I'm angry with him for making me do this. As much as I love to make you mad, I am not loving this."

"Yeah, I guess we could say our anger at him outweighs the feud between us." When the words leave his mouth, it's as if a lightbulb goes off above his head. "Hey, how would you like to, temporarily, put this feud on hold?"

"What are you implying?"

"We get even with Luke."

"How?"

"We pretend to date." My eyes go wide.

"I'm sorry?" I cannot believe the words that just came out of his mouth. "You can't be serious." He stares back at me, and I shake my head. "You're seriously wanting to fake date just to get back at Luke? For marrying your ex? Weren't you the one that dumped her?"

"That's the thing. I don't care that he's with her. What I care about is the fact he felt he couldn't be honest with me. It was a high school relationship. Lying to and being untruthful with your best friend is a line you shouldn't cross."

"The same way you shouldn't cross the line of dating his sister." I say, coming to terms with this. "What's the outcome of this if we do it?"

"Pissing him off enough that he realizes that he should've just been honest with me." I nod, slowly. "We can pretend to date until the wedding and then we break it off."

"I- I don't know, Thomas. Would this even be believable?"

"Oh, I definitely think so. We can say our mutual hatred was just our way of covering our true feelings." I can't believe I'm actually considering this. Fake date Thomas Hudson? Before I can even think it through, I'm opening my mouth.

"Alright, let's do it. It shouldn't be too hard considering they live in another state. Luke will be in town this weekend for our grandparents 50th anniversary party. We could tell him, and then he'll go back to Florida and we'll only have to fake it for the wedding." The plan unfolds, and it seems flawless. What could go wrong?
