Claire's POV
The dream was like a gentle whisper, a soft lullaby that carried me to a world where everything was perfect. I found myself in a cozy, sunlit house, filled with the warmth of laughter and love. Selene stood beside me, her eyes sparkling with joy as we moved through the house together.
"Time for bed, little ones," Selene called softly, her voice soothing as she guided our children up the stairs. I followed, my heart swelling with happiness as I watched her interact with them. Our kids—a boy with Selene's striking eyes and a girl with my unruly curls—giggled and squirmed as we tucked them in.
"Goodnight, sweethearts," I whispered, leaning down to kiss each of them on the forehead. Selene did the same, her touch tender and full of love. As we turned to leave, I felt her hand slip into mine, warm and reassuring.
"We make a great team," she said, her smile lighting up the room.
"Yes, we do," I replied, squeezing her hand. The feeling of completeness was overwhelming. This dream, this life, was everything I had ever wanted.
The dream shifted, darkening like a storm cloud rolling in. The warmth was replaced by a chilling fear. I was no longer in our home, but in a dark, unfamiliar place. My heart raced as I realized I was being held captive. Mark stood before me, his eyes filled with rage.
"You think you can leave me?" he hissed, his grip tightening around my arm. "You belong to me."
"Selene!" I screamed, desperately trying to escape his grasp. "Help me!"
Just as the terror reached its peak, a loud knocking jolted me awake. My heart pounded in my chest as I sat up, disoriented and drenched in sweat. The dream still clung to me, its dark tendrils slowly dissipating as I registered my surroundings. Someone was at the door.
I opened the door to find Selene, her face streaked with tears, looking more vulnerable than I had ever seen her. The sight of her, so distraught, made me forget all about the nightmare.
"Selene, what happened?" I asked, my voice filled with concern as I guided her to the couch.
She shook her head, trying to compose herself. "Don't worry about it. I just... I needed you."
I nodded, my heart aching for her. "Wait here. I'll make us some tea."
In the kitchen, I busied myself with the kettle, trying to calm my racing thoughts. When I returned to the living room, Selene looked slightly more at ease.
"Here you go," I said, handing her a steaming cup. "Now, tell me what's going on."
Selene took a sip, her eyes avoiding mine. "It's nothing, really. Just family stuff. I couldn't stay there any longer."
Before I could press her for more details, my phone buzzed. It was a message from Mark: "Won't be home for a few days. Business trip."
Relief washed over me. "Looks like we have the place to ourselves," I said, unable to hide my excitement.
Selene's eyes brightened at the news. "That's great. Means I can stay here with you."
A blush crept up my cheeks. "I-I guess so."
Selene's teasing smile returned. "You're blushing, Claire. Does that idea make you nervous?"
"N-No," I stammered, feeling my face heat up even more.
"Oh really?" she said, her grin widening. "Let's see about that."
She lunged at me, fingers finding my sides and tickling mercilessly. Laughter erupted from me, and I squirmed, trying to escape her playful assault.
"Selene, stop!" I gasped between giggles. "Please!"
"Only if you give me a kiss," she said, her eyes twinkling with mischief.
My heart skipped a beat. There was no way I could deny her, not when she looked at me like that. I leaned in, my lips brushing against hers in a soft, tentative kiss.
The world seemed to fade away, leaving just the two of us in that perfect, intimate moment. Selene's hand cupped my cheek, deepening the kiss, and for the first time in a long while, everything felt right.
I pulled back slightly, breathless and dazed. "Selene..."
"Yes?" she murmured, her forehead resting against mine.
"Thank you," I whispered. "For being here."
Selene's thumb brushed my cheek, wiping away a tear I hadn't realized was there. "Always, Claire. I'm always here for you."
We stayed like that for a moment, wrapped in each other's presence. The outside world, with all its problems and pain, felt distant and unimportant. All that mattered was us, here, now.
Selene's phone buzzed, breaking the spell. She glanced at it, her expression darkening. "It's my mother," she said quietly. "She's demanding to know where I am."
I felt a pang of guilt and fear. "You should go. I don't want you to get in trouble because of me."
She shook her head, her grip on my hand tightening. "I'm not leaving you. Not now, not ever."
The intensity of her words, the sincerity in her eyes, filled me with a warmth I hadn't felt in a long time. As she leaned in for another kiss, I knew that whatever happened, we would face it together.
