Days turned into weeks, and Selene's obsession with Claire only deepened. Every waking moment was consumed by thoughts of her, and every night was spent watching from the shadows. Claire's life had become an open book to Selene, every page filled with a mixture of joy and pain. The sight of Claire's husband holding her waist, whispering sweet nothings in her ear, ignited a fury within Selene that she struggled to contain. It was unbearable, this constant reminder that Claire belonged to someone else.
Selene knew she had to do something. She could no longer linger in the periphery, an invisible spectator to Claire's life. She needed to confront her, to make her presence known. The thought terrified her, but the alternative—continuing to watch from the sidelines—was no longer an option.
One afternoon, Selene mustered the courage to finally approach Claire. She waited outside the restaurant where Claire worked, her heart pounding in her chest. She watched as Claire moved gracefully between tables, her smile lighting up the room. Selene's nerves were frayed, but she knew she had to do this. She had to speak to Claire, to see if there was any chance, however slim, that Claire might feel the same pull.
But just as Selene took a step forward, her phone buzzed. She glanced down to see her parents' names flashing on the screen. Frustration surged through her veins. Of all times, why now? She hesitated, her resolve wavering, before reluctantly answering the call.
"Selene, where are you? We need you home," her mother's voice was firm, leaving no room for argument.
Selene clenched her fist, her jaw tightening in anger. "I'm busy right now. Can it wait?"
"No, it can't. Come home immediately."
Selene sighed, the anger giving way to resignation. "Fine. I'll be there soon."
She hung up, her eyes lingering on Claire for a moment longer before turning away. Her heart ached with the missed opportunity, but she knew she had no choice. She walked to the car waiting nearby and slid into the back seat, her mind a whirlwind of emotions.
Her driver, a middle-aged man named Thomas, glanced at her in the rearview mirror, a smirk playing on his lips. "You look like a twelve-year-old who didn't get her way."
Selene glared at him, her eyes flashing with irritation. "Shut up, Thomas."
He chuckled, unfazed by her anger. "Seriously, what happened? You usually have everything under control."
"Just drive," Selene muttered, slumping back in her seat.
Thomas raised an eyebrow but did as he was told. The car moved smoothly through the streets, the hum of the engine a stark contrast to the turmoil inside Selene's mind. She stared out the window, her thoughts returning to Claire. The missed opportunity gnawed at her, a reminder of how close she had come to changing everything.
As the city blurred past, Selene's mind raced with possibilities. She had to find a way to break free from the chains that bound her, to take control of her own destiny. She couldn't let her parents, or anyone else, dictate her life. And most importantly, she couldn't let Claire slip away.
The drive home felt interminable, each minute stretching into an eternity. Selene's thoughts were consumed by what might have been, and what still could be. She had to find a way to confront Claire, to make her see that they were meant to be together. But how? And when?
The car finally pulled into the driveway, and Selene stepped out, her resolve hardening. She would play along for now, do what was expected of her. But she wouldn't give up. She couldn't. The scent of Claire's blood, the allure of her presence, had woven a spell around Selene, one she was determined to unravel.
